🚨 New paper drop!

How does a social movement once started out powerful somehow turn into a partisan battle?

In our new publication in @icsjournal.bsky.social, we answer this question by analyzing 83 million #MeToo tweets from 2017–2020. 1/

Had a great time talking with @lseusablog.bsky.social about the use of AI in political communication, particularly during elections, as well as other "traditional" influence strategies such as trading up the chain and platform ownership. #USAPP

So your research area has been politicized and your federal funding cancelled, what now? I try to give some answers in this opinion piece for @nature.com 1/

When the government cancels your research grant, here’s what you can do
The mass cancellation of US federal grants marks yet another escalation in political interference in science, but there are ways to keep crucial research going.

So thrilled to have worked on this important piece with @yang3kc.bsky.social @m-dot-brown.bsky.social and Kayo Mimizuka. Data access for independent researchers is at such a critical juncture
[New WP] With the closure of major social media APIs and the new data access mandates under DSA, we enter what we call the "post-post-API" era. But have researchers obtained the data they need? Our recent survey (180) + interview (19) study suggests a stark reality.

@jolukito.bsky.social pointed out to me that academics constantly use present progressive tense ("I am wanting") when we should be using present tense ("I want").

Now I can't unsee it, it's everywhere

Late to this as I was wrapping up the semester (including a language, media politics class), but @alexpghayes.com 's kind QT reminded me of many helpful writing tips.

But a quick disclaimer: wrt syntax/grammar, I'm more of a descriptivist than a prescriptivist.

Okay, academic writing advice 🧵 👇
I am teaching my phd writing workshop course this quarter, question: are there any words/phrases said to you by an advisor/mentor that stuck with you, were memorable, or particularly helpful? If so please reply below!

The dismantling of American science. NSF CAREER grants are extremely competitive and help early career scientists establish their labs and independent lines of research. Such a loss!
I'm disappointed to share that my NSF career grant on anti-Asian dehumanization was terminated. This affects ongoing project activities, which have shown great progress so far, and support for my research team and more.

I'm sad to share that the hiring of the postdoc role is currently on pause.
We're hiring a Postdoctoral Scholar! Come join our @conflictcollab.bsky.social at Purdue PSY in the fall 🎉

The role involves opportunities to research and lead writing projects on humanizing organization, conflict mgnt, workplace discrimination, goals, and more! drive.google.com/file/d/1tke0...

Question for the crowd: Is there an existing dataset or source for the tariffs levied since Jan 20, 2025 to today (~79 days) for each country?

Thought about compiling one from presidential actions docs. Don't want to use news source-derived event data.

Friends, if you live in Texas, you can help us voice opposition to HB17.

This racist bill would effectively ban people from certain Asian countries (+Russia) on temporary visas from RENTING or buying property.

For those affected, the only option would be to leave TX.
🚨SB17 / HB17 would effectively ban citizens of China, Iran, North Korean + Russia from owning or leasing property in TX, unless they are US citizens or permanent residents. The bill would make it harder to recruit + retain grad students + professors. ⬇️
