UC Provost Katherine Newman has announced plans to defund this program, a preemptive capitulation with the feds that has not been ordered and should not occur. Newman has done this with zero consultation with campus-level leadership and none with any faculty — mentors or former fellows included.

NBC Out has had some of the best coverage of LGBTQ+ news in the last few years. In a time when the Trump administration takes historic assaults on transgender people's rights, this feels short-sighted. Good journalism is good business.

If you make "controversial statements" outside of classroom, that the President of the university dislikes, you can be summarily fired even if you are tenured.
