It’s been a quiet start to the season as regards runners for us so it was wonderful on Thursday when the two evergreen 9yos Hidden Pearl & Dereham each had their first run of 2025 in the same 1 mile & 6 furlong handicap at Yarmouth, and finished 1st & 2nd, both starting at 14/1. A very special day.

Chester’s excellent May Meeting this week, a racecourse at which they have been racing since 1539, making it Britain’s oldest racecourse. This photograph of Richard Hughes inside Chester’s weighing room I took 467 years later in 2006 - fairly recently you could say, in Chester Racecourse time!

Fairly chilly start to the day in Newmarket but the sun turned the dew to mist when it appeared and it was eerily beautiful for a while.

Hazy sunshine this morning in Newmarket. Not the strength in the sun there was during the week but should still be a nice day. Currently 10 degrees, forecast high 18.

Truly glorious day in Newmarket. Hottest day of the year so far. Warm & sunny from the outset, looking at an afternoon high of 25 degrees. Perfect weather but unlikely to last: we’re predicted a top temperature on Sunday of 11 degrees!
