Research management pays the bills. Science Fiction, music, cooking, and gardening make life worth living. There might be occasional photos of a certain tiny ginger feline terrorist.

I have Witch King on my shelves. I just gotta find time to read it!
The light and breezy Murderbot novellas are excellent reads but Witch King and Queen Demon mark Wells as one of the most important fantasy writers of the last 20 years

Need to catch up on boasting (politely) about my baking. Cupcakes for a family event tomorrow; the malteaser cake for a friend's birthday a week ago. Just as well I'm already diabetic.

Late to the party, as usual, but I've just finished @bluejo.bsky.social 's Among Others, and what a joy! Also discovered there's a lot of classic SF I need to catch up with :-)

I signed
Lmao at this open letter to the Unimelb VC proposing she pay for Meanjin with a 10% salary sacrifice that would still leave her better paid than the VC of the University of Cambridge

It was my joy to sign, & I recommend doing so to all in the world of arts & letters
An Open Letter to the Vice Chancellor of The University of Melbourne on the Closure of Meanjin

Third time I've tried to make ciabatta. First one was flat and dense (tasted great though). Second one, the dough went in the bin before baking. But I have a good feeling about these.

Victoria Sponge (Mary Berry's recipe). I added the cream and strawberries, because, well, why wouldn't you?

Mary Berry's Sultana Streusal Buns. The bun itself is very plain, but the crunchy, sugary topping really makes it.

When I have spare time (!) I write music. Here's something @rocketpilot.xyz and I jammed 16 years ago. Finally got around to re-recording it. inatransientsky.bandcamp.com/track/on-the...

I've had a copy of Hyperion by Dan Simmons on my shelves for years and finally got around to reading it. My god! All those hyperbolic comments you read on the backs of books (usually the mediocre ones): in this case they are all true! What a stunning novel

Your three-yearly reminder that if you vote for a major party, you are part of the problem. If you want good outcomes for the country, you need a strong cross bench, or better still, a hung parliament. Don't believe anything you hear from either the left- or right-wings of the I'm-in-it-for-me party

Hey I didn't know it was #worldbookday (UK & Ireland). Here's a photo of my favourite books: anything that's ever won a Hugo or Nebula for best novel. Still some gaps, but I'm getting there.

No, perfectly comfortable thanks. And you?

Hey, so quick question for the brains trust. I've just finished reading Primary Inversion by Catherine Asaro. I want to read the whole series and was going to do so in publication order, but is there a better way to read them?

Successful post-Christmas shopping trip. If you're in Brisbane, Aus, Pulp Fiction is the best indie bookshop for SF & fantasy (and crime). Can't wait to get into these
