Ultimately, King felt the plight of the disadvantaged so deeply he could not rest. And he believed that his opponents, including Goldwater, would be converted if they could be brought to understanding. Winning through love.

George Parker, only Black delegate on the platform committee. King addressed the committee on worker's rights. Goldwater appeared. Parker asks Goldwater, who had said he would enforce the civil rights act, to convince him he will commit to the principle.

Billboard and postcard. 64 republican convention centered on civil rights and extremism. Goldwater opposes civil rights act, because prohibiting discrimination by race is unconstitutional. He says discrimination is in the heart and cannot be fixed by law. It's a threat to freedom.

1960 Goldwater says the avg American is silenced by pressure groups. 'The less we say about civil rights, the better off we will be. ' 63 African American press covered Goldwater: race didn't matter, states rights mattered. Challenged, he was surprised but doubled down.

Sit in movement, King did not know how much to respond or support; Goldwater is silent. While King is drawn in more and more, Freedom Riders, Birmingham, he knows how dangerous it is. Counsel, thought and prayer leads to putting himself on the line. About time, about urgency.

King at the prayer pilgrimage speaks on voting rights. Federal government needs to act boldly to protect Black liberties. Liberalism can defeat the unholy alliance of states rights and radical right.

On a personal level, Goldwater advocated for desegregation, hired 2nd African American legislative aide in Senate. But also cozied up to Strom Thurmond etc. Didn't talk about race much, but criticized left for emphasizing differences.

BG says left wants to emasculate Americans and give them $10 to control them. King, in 55, Montgomery, 26 yrs old, organizes community to do the bus boycott. Individualism vs community.

After Dream speech, 62% of whites disapproved of King. Both conservative and civil rights movements center on the themes of freedom. Goldwater not a politician, but he is a salesman. As a freshman senator, he was the campaign chair, and spoke everywhere. Threats to freedom? Government and labor.
