In 2019, I submitted a case to the CWGC, that the Unknown Lance Corporal of the East Yorkshire Regiment in Plot 2, Row F, Grave 8 in Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belgium was the grave of 201107 Lance Corporal Samuel Chapman of the 1st/4th Bn East Yorkshire Regiment

A cemetery that sees very few visitors. Well worth five minutes of your time to learn about the men of the York & Lancaster Regt who fell here in 1918. Unusually these men are remembered by name on the Haspres town war memorial. Thanks for telling their story, Paul

#OTD 1914 a fleet of German warships shelled Hartlepool, Scarborough & Whitby from the North Sea. British coastal artillery returned fire & hit two enemy ships. 130+ civilians died & notably it was the first time in #WW1 that Kitchener's Army came under enemy fire with men of the 18/DLI being killed

2/Lt. Julian Martin Smith. Probably the first British Army #WW1 volunteer to die on the Western Front. He worked at the London Stock Exchange & volunteered on the 4/8/14. Served as Intelligence Corps Interpreter, attd. 9/Lancers. He saw action with 9/Lancers at Elouges. Wounded 7/9/14 & died 9/9/14.

On this day in 1918, the last German force of #WW1 finally surrendered.

Two weeks after the armistice was signed, on November 25, General Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck formally surrendered his East African forces to the British at Abercorn, ending a long campaign spanning four years.

Remembering Jack Clegg of the 1st Royal Marine Battalion, RND. He was posted missing at the Ancre 13/11/16 then later assumed dead. Jack was a Dodworth lad and a pit electrician on enlistment working at Church Lane Colliery, Barnsley. Remembered on the Thiepval Memorial.

My latest read. 'The Winding Road Unfolds' by T.S.Hope. Thought to be a psudonym. Published in 1937 it's a very powerful first person account penned by a teenage Tommy who served on the Western Front from July 1917. Worth a read if you can find it. Also published under the title 'Rage of Battle.'
