#OTD 1914 a fleet of German warships shelled Hartlepool, Scarborough & Whitby from the North Sea. British coastal artillery returned fire & hit two enemy ships. 130+ civilians died & notably it was the first time in #WW1 that Kitchener's Army came under enemy fire with men of the 18/DLI being killed

I believe so. His Bond of Sacrifice entry mentions Warren House that is still standing in West Wickham. Incidentally it was used as a hospital during the Great War.

My latest read. 'The Winding Road Unfolds' by T.S.Hope. Thought to be a psudonym. Published in 1937 it's a very powerful first person account penned by a teenage Tommy who served on the Western Front from July 1917. Worth a read if you can find it. Also published under the title 'Rage of Battle.'
