A drug smuggler whose prison sentence was commuted by President Trump was arrested Friday and charged with violating the terms of his supervised release after he was accused of a string of crimes that included assaulting a 3-year-old child.

This is blood-boiling. Charles Rogers was awarded the Medal of Honor in Vietnam after being wounded three times leading the defense of a position.

Google his name and the entry below comes up. When you click, you'll see the page has been deleted and the URL changed to include "DEI medal."

My department at Uppsala university has just announced two open PhD positions: one in history of science and the other in history of ideas. We research, for example, colonial history of science, history of medicine, and intellectual history. Deadline: 8 April

There are 16 teams in the National Football Conference

Since 2010, 15 of them have reached the NFC Championship at least once

But the Dallas Cowboys haven't been there since Google launched in the 20th century

NEW: 2024 has just been confirmed as the warmest year on record, and the first to breach the 1.5C threshold.

We used a ridgeline (Joy Division inspired) chart to visualise daily temperature anomalies since 1940.

2024 clearly stands out with 100% of its days above 1.3C and 75% above 1.5C.

I used to run a LAMP web hosting platform that allowed college students to use various one-click installers for PHP apps. 90% of our apps were #WordPress blogs. I want to help all of those users transition to a better blogging app, but I still don’t know of one that is free and easy for novices.

I just finished @tcolicchio.bsky.social’s ‘Why I Cook.’ It’s a very frank, open autobiography that also features recipes. I always enjoyed Colicchio on Top Chef, but this book made me feel a new level of appreciation for him as a chef and as an advocate for improving the food industry. #Booksky

Just finished reading @emilytesh.net’s Some Desperate Glory. It reminded me of Becky Chambers Wayfarers trilogy, but instead of every character being totally lovable, they’re all wonderfully flawed assholes. I really enjoyed the book and would strongly recommend. #scifilit #booksky

Finishing up book 1 of the new year now: John Le Carre’s ‘ A Murder of Quality’ is an odd book in light of the other Smiley novels. This Smiley feels like a sort of English Hercule Poirot. This book has the critique of English class but lacks the Kafke-esque critique of the bureaucracy.

If Santa is delivering a new games console to on Christmas, the first thing that machine will need when you switch it on is a big bastard of an update which could take an hour to install. Time counts for double on Christmas morning… see if Santa can get it done before then.

@scalzi.com What sci-fi stories have you enjoyed reading lately? And how do you compartmentalize your reading, so that you don’t accidentally borrow ideas into your own writing?

I’m currently reading ‘Women in the Valley of the King’s’ by @k8shep.bsky.social. It is a well-researched, feminist history of Egyptology. It’s also very accessible and transports the reader from their chair on a drizzly fall day to a warm boat, floating up the Nile.
