The UK is facing a critical failure in medical workforce planning.

Thousands of doctors are trapped in a bottleneck, blocked from progressing due to a shortage of training posts.

This has been a crisis that was foreseeable and entirely preventable. www.ft.com/content/ddb5...

I remember discovering these when idly swapping between the 3 TV channels we had back in the day (by standing up and walking to the telly)…was immediately captivated…which shows I was probably a geek then, or that there was no internet….great to see them still going strong

Perfect opportunity for some ex-medical students to have a go at injecting some milk of amnesia to members of the public….
Oh yeah. Forgot to mention it. I’ve got some ICU-Anaesthetic consultant posts out at the moment. Look it up on NHS Jobs.

Feel free to apply if you are eligible; or if you’re not, just have a punt anyway.

Many teams are using the excellent “Clinical Frailty Scale” developed by the wonderful @krockdoc.bsky.social.

(Often referred to as “the one with the pictures”!)

BUT it needs to be used properly, so I was pleased to see this infographic with some top tips on how to do that.

I’m reminded of a post from elsewhere (anonymised below)…over 2 years old now and things are getting worse rather than better. The new Lost Tribe is becoming an abandoned army and we can’t afford for them to march away from the NHS and UK

In 2010 the GMC took over PMETB, the body that oversaw Postgrad med training. PMETB itself had taken over responsibility from Royal Colleges (Specialist Training Authority). How have things gone since? Should Royal Colleges make bid to seize back control of training regulation? Opinions?

What better way to kick off than to tell you all about my first first-author paper, just published in Molecular Psychiatry.

Here, we set out to resolve a surprisingly fundamental debate: do our brains continue to make new neurons throughout life? 🧵

Whilst the country debates assisted dying again, our hospices face a funding crisis. Evidence is that fears about lack of good palliative care are driver for considering euthanasia or assisted dying. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Why do some places charge more for a large tea than a small or regular tea when it is literally the same tea bag but with just a bit more hot water?

Really interesting how cancer has replaced cardiovascular diseases as the leading cause of death in several rich countries. Decline in smoking, use of statins and better diagnosis all probably play their part

Our “new” FY1s at the Royal Derby Hospital aren’t that “new” anymore and have settled in just great…grateful for all their input during their first NHS bank holiday weekend as doctors…It was a lot busier than my first one 38 years ago!

What is the maximum number of programmed activities (PAs) that people on here think are reasonable for a hospital doctor to have in their job plans or their total number of jobs combined?….when do you worry they can’t be being delivered efficiently and/or healthily for the doctor ?
