I mean, I play D&D and Warhammer 40k, which are brimming with skulls in their aesthetics. If I was drunk and getting a tattoo and full of testosterone and trying to impress friends and fellows, I'd probably pick that skull myself, without realizing it.

There are so many things associated with skulls that I knew it was 'bad' but plenty of folks whose job entail violence take 'bad' to be 'badass'. No, I didn't know it was Nazi. But maybe folks in a different context would; I just think I give him the benefit of the doubt.

I've seen a bunch of those movies and if you'd asked me what the skull meant, I wouldn't have a clue. It's not a plot point or even pointed out; it's a historical detail. Platner suggested he got it while drunk and that seems way more likely to me; not attributing malice when it could be stupidity.
