Economics #MMT #auspol - views are my own - they/them - MPH MArts | Wangal Country

The economics part of my MPH in health econ left me wanting. Orthodox (neoclassical) assumptions were disconnected from real-world evidence. I had read about modern monetary theory #MMT and discovered heterodox schools of thought like ecological, feminist, and post-Keynesian economics.

This simple fact is worth repeating.

All the climate breakdown?

All those bushfires, floods, droughts, heatwaves, cyclones, and hurricanes?

All the car crashes?

All the microplastics?

It's all so that 100 companies responsible for 70% of the world's fossil fuel pollution can continue profiting.
Just 20 toxic fossil fuel companies are responsible for *half* the world's toxic single-use plastics.

They're a subset of the 100 toxic fossil fuel companies that have been the source of more than 70% of the world’s greenhouse gas air pollution since 1988.

Pretty niche, but this long(!) article by @timinclimate.bsky.social explores the technical reasons why Chevron's flagship Gorgon Carbon Capture & Storage facility never lived up to its promise or obligations.

1. That’s not how govt spending works - currency issuing government do not fund spending through taxation - the money wouldn’t exist if governments taxed first, spent second.
2. Austerity would likely cause a recession because government surplus means private debt (households and companies).

Some interesting logic on the Future Fund hysteria from ABC's Gareth Hutchens
The Future Fund's investments are already politicised. Why pretend otherwise?
The federal government has been accused of politicising the Future Fund by changing its mandate, but its investments have always been tangled up in politics.

We all need to become eco-populists. That means championing policies that significantly lower daily costs while lowering emissions. Heat Pumps for All, alongside much more robust tenant rights; free and better public transit; price caps on green energy; make polluters pay for the transition.
