Holiday season or not, Tucson’s gearing up for a very different ritual: the opening volley of legislative season.

Pima County’s wish list is long — and it starts with asking the state for more money.

ICYMI: Mayor Romero and Supervisor Scott are trying to reset the tone ahead of next week’s joint meeting — but the hard decisions about fentanyl, homelessness, & $23 mil in opioid funds are still looming.

The people who aren’t guaranteed a seat at the table may matter just as much as who are.

This week in Tucson: two viral hoaxes, hundreds of threats, and a reminder that debunking lies is exhausting.

Maybe it’s time we try a new rule — Hitchens’ Razor: “What can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence.”

ICYMI: Ward 5 voters saw one name on the ballot… and thousands still said “nah.” Selina Barajas won easily, but more than 19,000 people skipped her race entirely. Meanwhile, Prop 414 passed but even some loyal Democrats couldn’t stomach a $205-a-year tax increase.

Let’s just round up to 500 people that are here tonight.
October 24, 2025 at 2:18 AM
Tonight’s forum is being organized by Pima County Supervisor Jennifer Allen.

I am guessing most of the residents attending are not super happy with the proposal of turning a former state prison nearby into a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center.

Well, I can’t stay away from a good community meeting.

I am in #Marana tonight, covering a town hall on a potential #ICE facility being set up here.

Just laughing at my first mention of #ProjectBlue in the @tucsonagenda.bsky.social back in May.

Tune in tomorrow for more on #ProjectBlue.

However, the University of Arizona does.

We now bring you to the Tucson City Council meeting, already in progress.

As we hinted in today’s Tucson Agenda, Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes formally announced today that she is suing Congress to force them to swear in Adelita Grijalva.

There are several speakers talking about the political consequences of backing #ProjectBlue - a not to subtle hint that they will back different candidates in the next election cycle - which is several years away - or launch recall efforts.

A District 2 resident tells Scott and Heinz to step up, saying they should risk the potential lawsuit to kill #ProjectBlue.

I am surprised there hasn't been much discussion today about another data center project, something we at the @tucsonagenda.bsky.social are calling "Project Red, White and Blue."
October 21, 2025 at 4:51 PM
Supervisor Rex Scott is allowing people to clap and cheer - this is unusual - and it really changes the mood of the room.
October 21, 2025 at 4:51 PM
A sign for the #PimaSupes meeting room suggests the capacity for the room is approximately 317 people.
October 21, 2025 at 4:31 PM
There are dozens more inside of this room this morning that are being turned away today.

The sea of red is an indication that they are part of the "No Desert Data Center Coalition" who are still pushing the #PimaSupes - specifically Heinz and Scott - to change their mind.

𝗧𝗛𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗 🧵

Good morning, #Tucson.

I am here at the #PimaSupes this morning. I am a few minutes because the meeting is at capacity.

In the roughly 8 years I've covered the meeting regularly, it rarely been this full.

So why a car protest in addition to the pedestrians covering most of the block along Speedway?

I’d argue no, as many of the cars I’ve seen often have a younger driver with some elderly people waiving handmade sign in the passenger seat.

This is a multi-generational protest.
October 18, 2025 at 6:42 PM
Did I mention the car rally that is also wrapping around the midtown protest?

Hundreds of cars are driving around, waiving signs.
October 18, 2025 at 6:31 PM
There isn’t a typical protester archetype here in #Tucson, but this is a good example of what I am seeing today.

A couple demanding healthcare for everyone.

Another couple in matching inflatable costumes urging their neighbors to speak up against authoritarianism.
October 18, 2025 at 6:13 PM
This is what #Tucson looks like right now.
October 18, 2025 at 6:08 PM
I want to take a moment for some minor media criticism.

For those who are reading these posts from somewhere other than #Tucson, I assure that the #NoKings protest here today is entirely peaceful.

Families are bringing their kinds, people are armed with signs and slogans, not weapons.
