Silverbell Road is still cracked and crumbling. Tangerine Road improvements are still delayed. Now Marana voters are being asked to trust RTA Next will finally deliver — here’s what’s actually in the $2.67B plan for the fast-growing town.

Arizona AG Mayes calls out DHS Secretary Noem, after she called Arizona the worst state for election integrity/security.

"Multiple investigations, independent audits, and courts across this country have all reached the same conclusion: voter fraud is exceedingly rare," Mayes said in a statement.

I went to Nogales this week for the @tucsonagenda.bsky.social. Here's my fact-check of Secretary Noem's comments from her visit on Wednesday.
Hundreds of federal agents, a freshly painted black border fence, and a whole lot of Trump praise: DHS Secretary Kristi Noem brought a carefully staged victory lap to Nogales — heavy on symbolism, light on substance.

Tucson Police Chief Chad Kasmar has announced his retirement, leaving the city of Tucson. Kasmar has been with the department since 2000.

Tucson Deputy Police Chief Monica Prieto has been selected as the next chief of Tucson Police Department. Prieto has been with TPD since 1999.

A quick postscript from day's thread. At some point I wrote "data center" rather than ICE detention center.

To be clear, the county was talking about planned ICE detention center in Marana.

Senator Ruben Gallego puts out a statement a few minutes ago on DHS funding, voting no today on the spending bill.

“I cannot vote to give ICE and Border Patrol more money to terrorize our communities until we see significant changes to how these agencies operate,” Gallego said.

The group at Freedom Park might look small, but every single parking spot in the parking lot along 29th is full. And more people are still driving thru looking for parking.

Here is a quick video from the peaceful protest.

I’m attending a campaign rally for former #TucsonCouncil member Rocque Perez - this is not an endorsement, I’m here as a reporter - to listen to his speech (as well as endorsements from other local pols.)

Happening now:

Locals are protesting against the Trump Administration and ICE outside of the El Con Mall.

The modern streetcar is the RTA’s crown jewel.

The rest of the story? Half-built roads, unfinished promises, and a March vote that decides what gets finished — and what stays stuck forever.

Ballots for RTA Next (Props 418 & 419) hit mailboxes Feb. 11.

Tucson is drawing a line in the desert.

City leaders want parks, parking garages and public buildings to be safe from ICE operations — even as federal agents claim they don’t need warrants.

Will it matter? That’s the big question.

Yep, this is thread 🧵 #3. Yes, I know there is a big protest in downtown #Tucson protesting ICE.

But I am here in #Marana as a number of people are protesting a proposed ICE detention center.

Protests in downtown #Tucson continue to grow, presumably as more and more people leave work.

Locals are blocking some sections of Broadway downtown with an increased number of police on hand for traffic control.

Everything is still peaceful.

NEW THREAD!

Hundreds have turned out downtown to protest the Trump Administration and more importantly, ICE.

Together with a lot of other journalists I was just refused entry to a press conference with Greg Bovino in Minneapolis for unspecified "security reasons". I had sent an RSVP in time. Not a big deal tbh but another example of the press being restricted

The ICE raids haven’t hit #Tucson yet. But the arguments have. A public dust-up between County Attorney Laura Conover and columnist Tim Steller shows how thin the line is between legitimate enforcement and state-sanctioned intimidation — before the goons even arrive.

The loophole created for the developers of this data center to secretly set electricity rates behind closed doors and outside of the public process is new, rare, and a dangerous recipe for massive price hikes for Arizona consumers.

Final post of the night: from Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

After mentioning his pardon from Trump, he endorses increased ICE enforcement in Phoenix.

“Now that I have been fully vindicated, Maricopa County, AZ could use my anti-illegal immigration tactics again!” he wrote on Twitter.”

Rep. Greg Stanton also weighed in on news reports that will be increasing arrests in Phoenix this year.

“We will not tolerate tactics that terrorize Phoenix families because that is not who we are as Arizonans or Americans,” he wrote on Twitter.
