every college degree has only two pathways for careers

for example, if you get a degree in psychology, you can

1) help poor and underprivileged people: $30,000/year

2) research new ways to make people gamble even more: $700,000/year

They want the whole country to be this way
Texas legislators just passed a bill that
gives politically-appointed regents control over faculty curriculum, hiring, & governance. It does what they accuse academics of doing: privileging ideas, biases, & agendas on political grounds, & silencing those that do not follow their ideology.
Political appointees would have more control over Texas universities’ courses and hiring under bill OK’d by House
Senate Bill 37 would give more power to university regents, who are appointed by the governor, to vet and veto new curricula and administrators.

Ok so I'm an artist.
But I've had a really shit year, Health and a very sick parent.

I managed my first piece of visual art in more than 14 months.

Just a quick sketch of my beautiful friend Beth Reeks.

Absolutely awful. I'm teaching a class on abolitionism this term (focusing on the life stories of individual abolitionists in the US) and will be sure to bring up this news the week we discuss Douglass. It seems important to publicize/track examples of whitewashing in the public history realm. 🗃️
“The Maryland National Guard must decline events which celebrates individuals based all or in part on immutable characteristics,” the memo said.

Douglass was an abolitionist, suffragist, orator and author. That’s what we celebrate him. Let’s be clear: This bars celebrating him because he was Black.
Maryland National Guard out of Frederick Douglass parade after DoD order
Strict guidance from the national defense department crushed plans for a parade held in honor of Frederick Douglass’ 207th birthday because it was being held during Black History Month.

Could anyone recommend a good book that has both an original text and a modern translation of the Romance of Alexander, please? One with commentary on the text would be good too if possible.

I hadn't heard of this book until now (and you can find it @archive.org if you read down the thread), but it's a lovely, lovely thing. 🗃️
When I was a little girl someone got me this book, it made a huge impression.
It showed daily life in a little village based on one of the loveliest Medieval manuscripts ever; the Luttrell Psalter, known for its descriptions of daily life.

Thoughts of Woodland Walks
(After Robert Browning "Home Thoughts from Abroad")

"..the lowest boughs and the brushwood sheaf
Are in tiny leaf"

Yes I do miss my little English woodland.

Waking to walk in shady places
greens singing out in a spring shower.
