Before 1870, there was no Italy—just Italian-speaking states ruled by other powers and dreaming of independence. Verdi’s “Nabucco: Overture” stoked the Italian cry for statehood like a bugle call. Travel with me back to the Risorgimento in this clip from "Rick Steves’ Europe: A Symphonic Journey."

Vance's Easter visit to Rome clogged its streets with a 40-vehicle entourage. He also demanded the Coliseum be closed so he and his family could tour it alone. Tourists who properly booked slots in advance got screwed.

He's apparently the first to make that demand. Then he didn't bother to show up.

you can find things to quibble with in every Francis piece, but I picked this one to share because I feel like everything everyone is saying about him boils down to this: he was a Jesuit, through & through. I'll remember the times he made the church feel just a little bit bigger, if not big enough.

Today we've hit 99% of our April 1 average snowpack statewide and 100% of average for this date. That last storm really helped out!

Three years at or above average is exceedingly rare in California with the last occurrence being in the late 1990s. Time to celebrate!
