For those of us who grew up in the Great Lakes region in the 1970s, we will never forget the tragic loss of the Edmund Fitzgerald 50 years ago. This is one of the articles that inspired Canadian songwriter Gordon Lightfoot to compose his award-winning tribute “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.”

He was impressed with her 1933 performance in the scandalous film Baby Face, which I’ve seen. She is a modern actor in that film, ahead of her time, and head and shoulders above all the other performers.

Ralph Senensky had a huge collection of golden age movie posters in an upstairs bedroom. Hundreds of them. Disappointed at how few of the classic movies I had seen, he rattled off a list of “must see” movies, which I scribbled down as fast as I could. Here is his list. #TOSSatNight

Same split second timing of the transporter during an explosion as Doomsday Machine. Have to think that some atoms are out of place when they finally materialize. #TOSSatNight

Ralph described his working relationship with Jerry Finnerman as unspoken. He would stage the scenes and Jerry would light them. They harmonized without needing to speak to each other. #TOSSatNight

Love the purple lighting in Kirk’s quarters, a calming color to contrast with his growing emotional state. #TOSSatNight

Cinematographer Jerry Finnerman outdid himself with colored lighting on this episode. #TOSSatNight

Am crushed by the passing of Ralph Senensky. I was honored to know this great man, enjoying many hours of conversation at his home in Carmel. I loved his stories of working in Hollywood, including directing Star Trek. He was warm, witty, and fun. The world is a lesser place without him. #TOSSatNight

Ralph was very pleased with this gift from an admirer. He kept it on his dining room table where we had long conversations.

Was in Carmel this week looking forward to another visit with Ralph, but was unable to reach him. When there was no response to a knock on his door, I feared the worst. A member of his family informed us he was recovering from a recent illness. Am crushed by the news of his passing. #TOSSatNight

So very sad. I knocked on his door this weekend, and when there was no response I feared the worst. His memory will live in our hearts and his legacy on the screen. RIP my friend.

Just read that Ralph Senensky has died aged 102. I’ve had many hours of wonderful conversation with this great man. He was a joy. I could not reach him by phone this weekend, and when there was no answer at this door, I feared the worst. His great legacy will live in our hearts and on the screen.

The melting of the temple always impressed me when I saw this as a kid. As an adult I really appreciate the interplay between the Apollo and Enterprise themes in Fred Steiner’s music score for this scene. #TOSSatNight

Visited the Academy museum’s exhibition celebrating JAWs, which premiered 50 years ago. They’ve assembled a large collection of artifacts, including the buoy from the first shark attack, the fighting chair & rod, Joe Alves’ pre-production art, Brodie’s badge, and a mechanical shark you can control.
