Nevertheless, the second attempt, on October 11, reached up 71,300 miles, almost a third of the way to the moon, before the vehicle fell back and disintegrated in the atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean. As the Air Force prepared for its last try, one of the more romantic rocketeers remembered the lines from Tennyson: Picture of a page of a book. The last two lines he stenciled on the base of the Thor. It rose on a roaring plume of white fire but missed the lunar gleam. Radar and radio tracking showed that its third stage had failed to fire and it fell into the sea.

@comraderobot.bsky.social I saw this today in a childcare setting and wasn't sure just how many levels of cursed it was, so I thought I'd share. The orbiter hurts to look at closely, and I don't know enough to ID the rocket.
This picture apparently depicts the space shuttle in launch configuration with a five piece rocket instead of its usual tank and boosters. The shuttle seems to be a relatively low quality CGI version due to incorrect shape details, lack of regalia, and low resolution textures. The rocket appears to be from a photograph, but I don't know enough to identify it. Some small tubes poking out clearly have orange stoppers.

Solar wind particles are funneled to where aurora is most intense? IGY. Van Allen belts? IGY. Ocean currents, arctic ice, cosmic ray composition, LEO and higher observations -- lots of science happened.
Page 129 of the above referenced book, somewhat yellowed with age. The top of the page has a chart detailing the ionizing radiation sensors on the Explorer IV mission, while the rest of the page discusses the processing of the data received from the mission. Part of the text via OCR: As soon as the tapes from Explorer IV began arriving in Iowa Cty, Van Allen's men went to work plotting the results. By October, when I paid them another visit, the rolls of tape recorded from the satellites by the far-flung network of stations filled shelves that reached to the tall ceiling of their archive. It would take years to sift all this material, but they were making spot checks. They played the tape rough their clectronic filter-they were using their own by now— consisting of a squad of consoles. Nine needles-quivering, pulsing, or wandering —inscribed nine lines on a rapidly moving roll of paper.

Barely visible to the naked eye in Seattle, but nice color with longer exposures. The vertical streak one is how I realized I could see it with the naked eye as a faint grey. #Seattle 🔭
A faint green band of aurora crosses the image from top left to bottom right. There is a tree in the bottom right and a bit of tree in the bottom left. A few stars are visible. A dimly lit basketball hoop in the bottom left marks the start of a curtain of green aurora borealis that takes up much of the middle and right thirds of the image. A suburban treeline is visible along the bottom of the image. A very distinct band of green aurora cross the image from top to bottom at about the middle. Splashes of green aurora borealis was across much of the night sky in this image above a blurry treeline. Some streaky stars and the blurring hint at the long exposure and impromptu camera stabilization attempt.

@catsofyore.bsky.social , do you need a hug? I can imagine the touching and beautiful memorials folks are sharing are also quite heavy, and sometimes I need a hug when working through that much.
