...and then you all get to save face together, because they (leadership, stakeholders) still get what they were actually after (a good outcome) but you get to say I have a vision for how to measure it. It requires finesse and work, but that's evidence leadership imho.

If you're in a position to be setting the boundaries and constraints around what other people do at work -- you do developer experience, you pick tools, you are the voice of 'the engineers' to bosses, you do platforms, etc etc -- these are *your rules* to learn. Psychology isn't optional anymore!

I've been able to contribute to some OSS projects for work over the years and this is absolutely on the dot. OK, the code arguably is part of the contribution, but the heavy lifting is the people work.
The changed code is a small fraction of an open source contribution. Your commitment to understand the issue, how your proposed solution fits with the project, and be ready to own and push the review process forward is the biggest chunk of the work. Your effort is the contribution, not the code.

That's it! That's everything X is in trouble for in Europe.

It's kind of a nothingburger. It is not about speech.

Anyone who tells you otherwise has something to sell.

Has it not occurred to the Visual Studio team that their PCH files get invalidated every time a user installs an update to VC++? This mysterious error keeps happening.

A couple of suggestions:
1) Make the error message accurate. Say "Your compiler was updated so you have to rebuild this project"

Excited to be talking about my latest paper *Ban Cookie Banners: A Case Study in Tech Regulation* at PhilMod today at 12:30 ET!

Tune in if you want to hear why the history and measurable results of the laws that gave us cookie banners teach us a lot about how NOT to regulate tomorrow's tech.

Does anyone have suggestions for SF & F in which the main character is a full time wheelchair user?

Literally asking this for a friend who uses a chair and wants to see themselves in a book.

wow okay the fact this joke isn’t well represented on the web actually explains a lot because once you hear it…

anyway the joke is something like:

Q: What would an engineer call Kentucky Fried Chicken?

A: Hot Dead Birds
Ok what’s the hot dead birds joke though. I tried searching and got literally nothing, not even an ad, which is impressive.

One very weird thing about the Rocky Mountains is that since the 1950s or 1960s, we've known they had to have spent most of their geologic history buried under several kilometers worth of their own eroded material until <10 million years ago.

Neat recent paper on this here:

At one point, he says (regarding rare adverse events):

Moist von Lipwig is coming to save me from the Sign from Bluey. Could Rogue absorb the existential dread aura of the sign?
A bit of context…a game on another site, you have been kidnapped by the antagonist of the last TV show you watched, and the protagonist of the last book you read are coming to rescue you. The last tv show I watched was a Star Wars show, and the last book was Uncanny X-Men Red Wave
