Thought I’d pivot to writing the show notes on Substack while waiting... only to get hit with a #NetworkError here too. It refuses to save. 🚫

Nowhere is safe. Opening up a blank Word doc. At least my hard drive won't ghost me (hopefully).

The early bird catches... a #CloudflareOutage? 🫠

Woke up at dawn, coffee in hand, ready to crush this podcast edit on Descript. But the internet had other plans.

This is clearly the universe punishing me for not finishing this yesterday. Lesson learned (maybe).

"However," Baek continues, "almost no one today believes the citizens of Gwangju truly lost...The will for #democracy heated up university campuses throughout the 1980s. That power finally ended 36 years of #military #dictatorship. Democracy defeated the #oppressors."

I might not have finished it at all had I not recently read Baek Seung-jong's "Learning the Future from Donghak" ( #백승종 - #동학에서미래를배운다

Baek asks: "The Gwangju Democratization Movement of May 18, 1980: did it succeed, or did it fail?"

Some books flow easily. Others demand everything from you just to turn the page.

Han Kang's #HumanActs ( #소년이온다 ) was the latter. It took me a long time to finish. The book moves through the 1980 #GwangjuUprising through bodies, voices, wounds that refuse to stay buried.

Proud #voter here: since I became eligible, I never missed an #election: Korea, Korean overseas elections, and now every U.S. election as a citizen.
Today is #ElectionDay. If you haven’t voted yet, please go. Every vote counts.
(Yes, that #skunk covers my info because it’s my 7-year-old’s favorite🦨)

Sunday #pediatrics → Seattle Children’s ER for suspected appendicitis.
Thankfully, not appendicitis; likely viral.

First #ER visit ever for our 7-year-old. Last year my husband, this year our kid. Next year I’m breaking the cycle. 🙏

#Korea’s quiet #superpower is #uri (우리), the “we.”

History could have produced cynicism, yet people kept building. “Try anyway” is learned from patterns: rebuild after war, win back #democracy, recover from the 1997 crisis.

Korea has removed presidents who didn’t serve the people.
America can too.

My husband is Korean and I’m American.
He kept saying, “we have a president that we can be proud of.”
I want to be able to say that about mine too.

Turnout note: it was packed. No overhead shot, so these look fragmented—but the crowd was huge.

There were over 100 #NoKings protest sites across Washington state today!

We dropped our daughter at Saturday Korean school and came here.

The whole time we kept saying, ‘We should’ve brought her. This is real education.’

Every sign and chant hit hard, and I just kept tearing up.

In many cultures, the highest praise is “a law-abiding citizen.”
In #Korea, it’s “a person who could live without laws.” (법 없이도 살 사람)

Not anarchism—just a conscience aligned with we #uri

Such feedback is pure rocket fuel. 💛
Thanks a lot, @zephtx.bsky.social!

Your encouragement and recognition help me keep going 🥹

If anyone wants the real stories behind #K-dramas and Korea’s #DemocraticDevelopment, I’m sure my writing will be useful (even to #Korean readers too!)

Did you know South & North Korea celebrate Hangul (Korean alphabet) on different days?

South: 한글날 = Oct 9, 1446 (official)
North: 조선글날 = Jan 15, 1443 (creation)

If reunified, which date should be kept—or both?

More cards (5–6) + the player view.
#LearningKorean isn’t just vocab—it’s context.

If you can follow these terms, you’re reading Korea between the lines.

Even most Koreans don’t know this much history (seriously, quiz your friends).

Happy #HangulDay! 🎉
I made 9:16 glossary cards for Episode 3 of my podcast #UnderstandingKorea —so you can catch the history behind the words (Joseon, scholar-officials, exams, Sejong).

In an emergency, Koreans say “Saram sallyeo!” (Save the person), not “Help me.”

One centers the individual voice. The other calls we to act.

President Lee Jae-myung as parking marshal—batons in hand.

Watch closely: democracy as a plane, lightsticks as citizen power, a president with batons on the tarmac.
What symbolism do you see?

And who’s the parking marshal expertly guiding this whole maneuver? 🧑‍✈️

#PresidentLeeJae-myung.
Many viewers read the symbolism as personally sorting recent turbulence in Korean democracy and putting things back in order so the runway’s clear for a fresh start.

Then #G-DRAGON re-parks the plane.

A lot of viewers read that as re-parking #democracy —putting it back in the right spot so the runway is clear to go. (Again, audience interpretation.)
