China intimidated UK university to ditch human rights research www.bbc.com/news/article...
Shame on SHU for caving to Chinese intimidation.
Even if they backed off when they were duly warned by the UK govt.
But how many such horror cases of selfcensorship by universities go undetected, out of fear?

It is pretty noticeable that even as mainstream opinion on Israel and Gaza finally shifts, you don’t hear the Responsible Adults apologizing for punishing all the college kids protesting the atrocities. Quite the opposite in fact!

Very stupid idea to create bs new program when threatened. Everyone knows, you only create bs new programs when someone writes you a big enough check.
As a conservative, my position is: Harvard should make NO changes under federal government threat. It should be willing to consider any and all changes only after that threat is lifted.
Exclusive: Harvard leaders have discussed creating a center for conservative scholarship as the school fights the Trump administration’s accusations that it is too liberal.

Gallup has new polling on immigration. Topline findings:
-Americans hate Trump's immigration policy (35% approve, 62% disapprove)
-Share who say immigration is a "good thing" for the country just hit an all-time high (79%)

Interesting (and discouraging) example of how PRC desperation to whitewash their policies in Xinjiang hurts its international relations and makes it harder for those trying to maintain engagement with China. A 🧵regarding Princeton Press' trip to Xinjiang:

Trump's order to halt international student visas undermines one of the top US exports--in the top ten, generating billions of revenue annually, not just for universities. I'm not hearing much noise from politicians about this attack on the economy, though.

The reporting about Trump's stopping of interviews for new student visas misses a main point: Pretty much the whole world besides US and Israel opposes Israel's actions in Gaza. Trump makes social media silence about on-going genocide a visa condition.

Shame on GW. Universities should certainly be divesting. They should not be punishing their best students for calling out genocide as Israel starves thousands of children to death. These universities will be apologizing for all of this. Faculty reaction? www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...
