I teach social science and philosophy at A-Level in London. I am interested in social and political theory, among other things.
A major publisher should reprint the work of Simon Clarke. Marx, Marginalism and Modern Sociology deserves its 3rd edition imo

I enjoy reading and thinking through Bourdieu. What are the best critiques of his sociology?

Has anyone written on or critiqued the new political feeling that the post war consensus was the pinnacle of economic life? Seems to be quite common amongst under 40s to clamour for a return to Keynesianism

Something really alluring about 1980s-2000s social and political theory being written in the shadow of (the end of) history and late/post modernism

Adorno and Horkhiemer get accused of pessimism, which yes is a theme in some of their writings, but it's mostly from their work during the war. Not sure optimism was a natural feeling then?

Adorno in his lectures series "Introduction to Sociology" makes a relevant point. He writes (see below) "...if research projects were set up from a standpoint which, in terms of this division of labour, were defined as social philosophy, no money would be available for them".

Looking forward to getting my hands on this!

Great critique of the very idea of 'Technofeudalism' which is bound to become vogue: wrap.warwick.ac.uk/id/eprint/18...

"The ideology of individualism is not necessary to capitalism, since late capitalism can function perfectly well without it" Abercrombie, Hill, and Turner, p.185 in The Dominant Ideology Thesis. Poor guys hadn't heard of Thatcher by then...

Going to start a thread on book I have read this year.

What Adorno's late work demonstrates is how many misconceptions there of his thought, especially in relation to Marx. There is a radical critique there

Thinking about the dominat ideology thesis and critiques of it. The usual point is that the ruling class themselves have the 'cement' of ideology and the working class etc are more prone to economic compulsions especially in late capitalism...

I watched the film Nickel Boys recently. A good picture and well made. Interesting pov form. While not the greatest movie of all time, it has interesting things to say about subjective experience and objective historical conditions, as well as social relations.

Hello everyone. I am currently reading Sohn-Rethel's Intellectual and Manual Labour. What a great bit of social theory and epistemology. Part III on socialism and societies of appropriation/production is fascinating (so far)
