If the alleged Tren de Aragua gang members were, in fact, Venezuelan “soldiers,” then wouldn’t the Geneva Conventions apply and, if so, is sending them to an El Salvadoran “hellhole” prison legal under the Conventions?

Do y’all remember learning about The Dark Ages in school - the period of time in Europe marked cultural and scientific decline and the rise of feudalism, a political system where nobles exploited the poor to support themselves? I wonder why I keep thinking about these lessons. 🧐

The president could sign the order as early as Thursday. He would need support from Congress to get it done.

"I think we do need to delete entire agencies, as opposed to leave part of them behind. ... It's kind of like leaving a weed," Musk said. "If . . . you remove the roots of the weed — it doesn't stop weeds from ever going back, but it makes it harder."
Six reasons why you should love weeds | One Earth
Essential to pollinators, birds, and soil, native weeds are not a blot on the landscape but rather beautiful indicators of health and abundance.

As the U.S. shifts its alliance to Russia, does anyone other than me understand Trump’s suggestion that Canada and Greenland should be owned by the U.S. is for a reason that is entirely unrelated to economic reasons?

Governor Hochul’s @govkathyhochul.bsky.social terrible decision to expand the Iroquois pipeline and increase New York’s dependency on fracked gas is not just a betrayal of our state climate law; it’s a personal betrayal of those who live near the toxic compressor stations that serve it:
Minutes before I snapped this picture in October 2024, the Governor looked me in the eye and assured me to “not worry” about the expansion of the Iroquois compressor stations. On Friday, the DEC issued permits allowing the expansion even though its emissions violate NY’s cimate laws. Bye, Kathy.

Please read Dr. Steingraber’s thread about NY violating its own climate laws to expand the gas flowing through an aging pipeline because of false narrative that users in the metro area need more gas. This winter is freezing and there have been no shortages, so where’s the need Governor Hochul???

As Dems argue about what went “wrong” in this past election, they are seemingly ignoring the most obvious of answers: our lack of a “shared sense of reality.” This essay by @brianklaas.bsky.social is a must read.
The Democratization of Information Production is Killing Democracy
The way we receive information about our world is unlike any previous generations of humanity. Paradoxically, it's destroying democracy—and Trump's America is the main canary in the coal mine.

Please correct me if I’m wrong, but this trip seems especially yucky because going to Mar-a-lago sends a much different message than meeting with Trump in DC or in the White House after January 20th. Mar-a-lago is representative of a king, an authoritarian, an oligarch, not a U.S. president. No?

Faustian Capitalism

The Mar-a-Lago press conference was a nightmare reminder of the press failures during the first four years. I’m begging the press corp: Please ask and re-ask your colleagues’ important questions until Trump gives an answer or makes it clear that he won’t answer. Stop letting him get away with it.
