Heavy metal poisoning to own the libs.
Today EPA chief Lee Zeldin announced that the agency is rolling back 31 regulations.

He's taking aim at mercury, soot, and toxic pollution restrictions, and federal protection of wetlands.

The EPA will also rewrite rules limiting pollution from fossil-fuel plants and cars, and more.

Between 2012 and 2014 I worked with a very diverse team.

Our technical team working in the Great White North included two from 🇮🇳, one from 🇵🇰, our team lead was 🇱🇰, one 🇸🇴, one from 🇿🇼, one 🇾🇪 and us 5 🇨🇦.

We spent long hours together. Aside from learning more about the world, it changed me. 1/
I’m a white cis-male scientist.

I’ve been asked why I support DEI efforts in STEM and in conservation, including donating time and expertise to groups promoting this, including serving on professional society committees.

Here’s my answer:

This brings a whole new dimension to the "BuT hEr EmAiLs" story!
Federal email addresses are now getting OPM spam because the emails from OPM telling people to quit have some from a NON SECURE email server. Must is supposed to be a tech genius and can't even do SIMPLE THINGS PROPERLY!!!!!

This Maxar Technologies sat image with SWIR shows what was on fire in Altadena, California this morning at 10:45 a.m. local time.

Nearly everything.

Polymarket has a whole section about the Palisades fires where you can win money predicting how many acres will burn. My story: www.businessinsider.com/polymarket-t...
Polymarket is taking bets on the Palisades fire in California
The crypto betting platform has several wagers open about the fires in California. It says crowds can help lend "unbiased forecasts" for big events.

Even more spectacular is how we're still losing sea ice in January.
Sorry - a not so very good Sunday ice update. #Arctic sea ice extent is easily the *lowest* on record to kick off a new year (JAXA data)... 🌊

• about 610,000 km² below the 2010s mean
• about 2,160,000 km² below the 1980s mean

But I was told to prepare for the coldest January of my life!
Euro AIFS and other long-range guidance is already flipping back to a mild pattern across the Central U.S. in mid-January.

Jan 5-6 winter storm was handled well at range, but long-lasting Arctic deep freeze / polar vortex link over the Central U.S. seems like it was perhaps oversold.

Especially further East. There are many cities with departures every hour and less than 90 minutes in the air. A good example in Canada would be Montreal-Toronto with hourly flights of mostly business people traveling downtown-to-downtown.

I think airlines also have good lobbyists holding that out.

Recent political trends reflect this very well and it's hard to be optimistic for the near future.

Of the COVID pandemic has proven one thing: it's that the average population is not willing to permanently give up on comfort for risks that do not appear to be immediate dangers to their life.
Thanks to billionaires/petrostates, industry shills, hired guns, and the press, “Anti-science is now a lethal force that threatens human civilization. We can no longer fight climate change and pandemics unless we can find a means to defuse the anti-science bomb that threatens our future.”

This can be a life threatening situation. Please if stranded avoid trying to walk away from your vehicle as you could get lost if conditions worsen.

Also ensure your car exhaust stays clear to avoir CO poisoning.

These are the two most common ways people die in such situation.
Very scary...this is the view in Pennsylvania on I-90. Traffic is stopped completely, and people are getting out of their cars...

Really hoping everyone stays safe especially as the sun goes down. #pawx

Just to compare: Should this trend keep going, what we are likely to call a "break" (the next 5-7 years minimum, assuming there is one) would have been a pre-2010 maximum record.
Along with a clear upward trend, 2023 and now 2024 are the warmest August to October periods on record for the #Arctic Circle.

Graph is using the NOAAGlobalTemp v6.0.0 dataset (www.ncei.noaa.gov/products/lan...).
