Today in 'let’s stop filling the internet with GenAI animal slop and start respecting and protecting the real ones we have' -- I give you:

🐟The cutlass fish. Yes it’s REAL.

It looks like it’s forged of shiny steel, and lives in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans!

Incredible creature.

For the record -- HERE (below) is one of Elizabeth's illustrations -- of a Himalayan monal.

She was ridiculously skilled, and got next to no credit in history, while her husband (John Gould) is ornithology-famous.

She did around 650 lithographs in her short (37 year) life.

Today in 'lets stop filling the internet with GenAI animal species and start respecting and protecting the real ones we have' -- I give you:

🦜 Mrs. Gould's Sunbird. (Aethopyga gouldiae)
Yes, it's REAL.

Named after Elizabeth Gould, a remarkable bird artist who died at only 37.

Whoa hold up - new fish species just dropped.

The Guayabero River Knifefish is newly discovered. They can swim backwards and forwards thanks to their weird ribbony bodies.

Oh, and this is its face.

Hey yeah, fyi if you wanna have fun heisting some crown jewels in fiction, you can enjoy this series where my MC steals ‘em from the Tower of London!

Very curious if the real thieves used the same technique I chose, because the motorbike escape was my getaway too 🤣

A few of you veteran kidlit folks might remember I’ve always loved sculpting - I’ve been getting back into it!

This is a banana I made - it’s clay!
What should I make next? #sculpture

If you or your kids are feeling a sense of 'what good can one person do when times are so tough?', I highly urge you to immerse yourself in some NF stories of those who have created big (and small!) changes through their curiosity.

I've got a few books to start you off!
Hard is not impossible.

Celebrating with my October self portrait, which truly captures my year-long face.

I was talking to a kid reader about penguins and mentioned that a "penguin scientist" had found some ancient fossils and the kid said

PENGUINS CAN BE SCIENTISTS?!

Naturally it reminded me of this pic, which I had to reshare with you all.

Ooh it’s Mary Shelley’s birthday! Remember the time she invented science fiction?? GOOD TIMES.

She is one of my MCs in my Elements of Genius series, so if you want to enjoy more badass thinkers of history saving the world, these are for you!

It’s 50 years of JAWS, and a great time to remind y’all that a real life lady scientist fought her whole life to show people that sharks were not maneating monsters, & instead that they were beautiful, intelligent creatures - worthy of our love.

And bonus: you can buy a book about her today!
