Best book quote about playing D&D:

“… I realized D&D might put me in touch with other people who might enjoy reading super-long books, calculating probabilities, and memorizing charts.”

I have often wondered why, when stores close, landlords leave the spaces empty for years at a time instead of lowering rents. The answer, apparently, is banks often won't let them:
The hidden culprit driving America’s apocalypse of boarded-up storefronts
The pandemic kicked off a "doom loop" that has gutted cities and towns across the country. Big banks are making it worse.

I spend a lot of time yelling about bad bills, but here is a good bill. Reps. Anna Eshoo, Debbie Lesko, and @wyden.senate.gov have teamed up on a bill that would fund more clinics supporting victims of tech-enabled abuse.

Check your local ballot! Some of us are in districts with no ballot items, but you should make your voice heard whenever you have the opportunity. Don’t lose democracy by non-participation!
People of the US: election day is tomorrow. Voting is harm reduction and small, local elections are the ones where your vote has the highest impact. Go do the thing.

Palestinian civilians are being relentlessly bombed by the Israeli government—thousands of Palestinian children dead. And Rep. Zinke's response is to try to kick out any Palestinians who may be in our country.

This fear-driven cruelty should have no place in American politics.

Hey real quick before you use language like “since the pandemic ended” or “back during the pandemic” look at how many people died of Covid in the US last week.

Our group at work does accuracy and efficacy research testing AI for various things.

The results aren’t merely bad much of the time. Most of the time current LLM and generative AI systems suck.

We told one to measure a mile as 5000 feet, so it did. Imagine how that worked out.
One of my students searched for a stat about the number bear attacks each year. Google AI returned 800,000 a year. The source? An Onion article. I couldn’t have engineered a better example of why they must use more reliable sources for information. AI is breaking the Internet.

We should listen to this reminder.

Empathy is about understanding and caring even without having experienced the same thing the person you have empathy for has experienced.

Viewing images or video that traumatizes the viewer is not needed for empathy.
A reminder that you do not have to personally observe violent images in order to bear witness to history, and no one is under any obligation to do so as a means of activism or showing support.
Also, don’t watch atrocity videos. They are there to harm you. You do not have any sort of obligation to watch people suffer cruelty and people who tell you it’s your job to bear witness do not understand what they are saying.
