As part of for the course, we had a hard frost last night in MN and the catalpa tree decided to drop its leaves. All at once. In the driveway. #fall

A pleased #cat who ate his lunch, then took advantage of a closed door Zoom meeting to convince the other owner (who just arrived home) to feed him a second meal

The cat has decided that my post lunch productivity should be delayed

Found this fellow staring at me in the bathroom. A house pseudoscorpion that’s smaller than a sesame seed, but apparently deadly to dust mites. Never thought my house would have apex predators (of micro fauna) running around with massive claws. #Nature

So these carrots were all planted from the same seeds, at the same time, in the same half of the plot, and watered the same way. Lots of variance going on.

And upon walking home from the kids bus stop, a monarch on the same patch of zinnias. Lots of butterflies around here

An orange sulphur butterfly on a zinnia. Making the most of this Minnesota early fall heatwave

After a summer of frustrated meowing cause no one was waking up early, the cat seems quite annoyed on this first day of school that everyone woke up early

The kids black swallowtail caterpillar (that was happily captured while munching on my dill and carrot tops, and raised in a jar) has finally emerged from its chrysalis. Another good activity and sign of the ending summer

When one is away for over a week, I guess this is what happens to a zucchini. I see zucchini bread in our future.

Guess there is no more dill for our morning eggs

And right next to it, here’s a black swallowtail on some bee balm

Found this cool #fungi growing up from our flower garden. I think it’s Dead Man’s Fingers (Xylaria). There was an old tree stump here and wood mulch, so I’m not concerned about it harming any living tree. I haven’t seen it before, so some learning for myself on a Sunday

Summer in Minnesota and the veggie garden in full production mode. Basically every dinner from now on will have zucchini and/or green beans incorporated

I appreciate that the Oneida word for this month is Ohyotsheli or the String Bean moon. Our gardens string beans are in full harvest having made Greek stewed green beans and Asian style stir fry green beans with, of course, chunks of squash thrown in for both.

So far the critter cage is a success! Now I just need 50 more bowls like this and I’ll recoup my money for the cage materials

I remember when every week the weekly NIH notice was filled with a dozen or more upcoming funding opportunities. Now it lists ‘None.’ Incredible how a few months have literally ground the global crown jewel of health and medical research to a halt.

Well I (mostly) finished my critter proof strawberry cage. It only took $40 worth of materials and several hours of work to save what will probably amount to 2-3 pints of strawberries…if we’re lucky.

Environmental Health Perspectives (IF 10.1), perhaps the premier global environmental health journal with incredible editors and Gold Access for all papers(!), is no longer accepting or publishing papers. It was heavily supported by NIEHS.

From a scientific perspective, slowly changing astronomical forces and an improved solar inclination have made the cat more pleased with his sleeping spot

The cat is ensuring that the spinach package is well ventilated with fang holes

Article headlines like this are problematic. Outdated hydrants or not, municipal water systems are NOT EVER designed to fight explosive wildfires that cover hundreds/thousands of acres. It’s like arguing over band aid size to treat a bullet wound. Instead write about serious action to take…

I work with the CDCs Social Vulnerability Index #SVI. I used it this Wed for a project on cancer exposures. Today the website is gone and no-longer accessible. This numerical index for disaster vulnerability was has no agenda. We have an administration restricting access to data and thus knowledge
