Yes we all agree that this is the reason colleges are in trouble
She knows that many people disagree, that they see the value of liberal arts as less about job preparation and more about teaching students how to think. It's a nice sentiment on some level, she says, but it's also hopelessly naive. More to the point, she argues, it's exactly the reason many colleges are in trouble: Faculty grew too powerful and too romantic about their role in society. Students are her customers, she says, and at colleges like Albright they no longer major in Latin American studies or even economics. If they want an Al major, her responsibility is to give them one.

CAIL = prerequisite knowledge for a critical perspective, such as to tell apart nonsense hype from true theoretical computer scientific claims. For example, the idea that human-like systems are a sensible or possible goal is the result of circular reasoning and anthropomorphism. olivia.science/ai

The Possible Futures workshops are so centering for me. They always bring me back to what any of this is for.

This is essential!!

When we share values and a vision of the future with others, conflict and tension and difference can be generative. They strengthen us.

But ask any mediator: without a sense of shared goals or values, those same conflicts and tensions can decimate a relationship (or movement).

The case for optimism about Anthropic is that LLMs are not going to become commodities any time soon - that people will pay a premium for models with desirable characteristics. And that perhaps the way to instill these characteristics is to think about the problem more like a philosopher than an engineer. If Google is run by engineers and Anthropic is run by philosophers, OpenAI seems to be run by product managers. OpenAI is the best in the world at producing compelling product demos - think, for example, about last year's launch of GPT-4o with its live voice capabilities or this year's release of the Sora app. But these demo-friendly features don't always seem to have staying power. And Sam Altman seems increasingly concerned that OpenAI could get eclipsed by either Google's engineering-centric approach or Anthropic's relentless focus on model quality.
