Hi all!👋 This year, my sabbatical will focus on learning more about the brain, esp. neural mechanisms behind social theory of mind & affect. This includes its breakdowns, e.g. psychosis, hallucinations and delusions related to ToM. I'll be posting what I learn along the way. Thanks for connecting! ☺️
High salt, sugar, fat. Canada now warns you about food we crave. Our bodies need these substances in moderate doses and they give short term satisfaction. But they're bad for our health in large quantities over long periods of time. Why not similar policies over what we crave emotionally?

"How do I know I'm not dreaming right now?" asks kiddo over breakfast.

Still convinced that kids ask the best questions. What would you answer?

Orbitofrontal cortex, my new cortical area obsession. In the PFC, integrates emotion and decision-making. Necessary for VTA neurons to produce dopaminergic reward prediction error. Implicated in multiple psychiatric disorders. 🧐

Continuing a neurobiology course this Winter. Today I learned about Eric Kandel's Nobel prize winning work on modeling the neural learning system of the aplysia sea slug. From interaction, to molecules, to CREB for long-term learning, to behaviour -- absolutely fascinating!

Prediction: In 10 years, “hardest problem” articles like this will shift from the challenge of ”C and perception“ to “C and emotions/mood“. The first is fascinating. The second is required to understand psychiatric functions & conditions.

Completely agree. And if I can make a self-promoting plug here, we have a nice table in this paper trying to separate some of these ideas out. The brain is very information-efficient (bits/ATP), while still being very expensive in energy consumption (ATP/sec).

I am slowly learning about how the neurochemical system in the brain modulates function in localized areas. Neurotransmitter receptors are heterogeneously spread out. The combination of neurotransmitters + receptors can change, essentially, the threshold of activation functions 🤯
