From defending smaller nations to standing against the forces of fascism, communism, and terror, Canadian soldiers have laid down their lives for freedom - for the rights of others. We remember them today, and we strive to live up to the example and the sacrifice of heroes like John George Pattison.

Just three months later, after saving so many lives, Pattison was killed in action near Lens, France, on June 3, 1917. Today, above all days, we remember men and women like John George Pattison: people who run towards danger, not from it. Who fight to protect the ones they love.

Through the courage and sacrifice of men like Pattison, Canada emerged from Vimy more united and more self-assured. Our country became a nation.

As Canadians reflect today on the 112,000 soldiers who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in the service of our country, I think especially of Calgarian John George Pattison. He would go on to earn the Victoria Cross for extraordinary bravery during the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

We had a productive conversation that covered federal commitments and collaboration on affordable housing, community safety, and infrastructure investments, including our energy industry. I invited him to visit Calgary soon, and I look forward to working together to benefit all Calgarians.
