Also found a really interesting 2023 piece claiming that 1/3 of NYC shoplifting as committed by the same THREE HUNDRED ABD TWENTY SEVEN people, which doesn’t suggest a crime wave so much as a committed group of bad actors.

That time range started before, but does include, the pandemic, a time of seismic social changes, so I’m not sure that reasons will be easy to pinpoint.

I was curious if it were true, that shoplifting was at an all-time high.

It seems like it’s not — there was a pronounced increase in 2019-2023, but outlets as far apart politically as the New York Post and CNN are reporting shoplifting down by 12% this year, and for a variety of reasons.

I also think the shorter episode count really affected these two seasons. There weren’t enough episodes to meaningfully create a formula and then vary it; even the good episodes were splitting the difference between episodic and seasonal needs
