Quantitative population and migration ecologist at U.S. Geological Survey Eastern Ecological Science Center in Laurel, MD. Among other things, I analyze Breeding Bird Survey data.
This is so depressing. Ceding the future to other countries while we make our air dirtier and our planet hotter. Gift link, if you dare. Really hope this horrible bill fails completely.

Senate’s tax bill seeks to gut clean energy; Musk calls it ‘utterly insane’
The Republican-controlled Congress is poised to score a major win for President Trump by repealing green energy incentives that Democrats passed in 2022.

Another step towards linking animal migration and population dynamics using integrated modelling! The secret lies in a neat equation relating survival and transition probabilities between migratory regions
An integrative framework to combine migratory connectivity and demographic data
Migratory species experience various conditions and events throughout their annual cycle that influence their spatial and demographic dynamics. To understand these dynamics, it is essential to des...

Post-migratory movements in the nonbreeding season are in fact displayed by a surprising number of birds around the world, with diverse resource- or weather-based cues. Two former students in the lab wrote a paper documenting examples of this: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....
Post‐migratory nonbreeding movements of birds: A review and case study
While many migratory birds are conceptualized as using a single wintering site, technological advances that enable detailed tracking of individual birds are uncovering more examples of post-migratory....

Long-billed Curlew and 'Akikiki may be an ocean apart, but they have at least one thing in common: They both benefit from funds coming from the United States federal budgeting (AKA, appropriations) process. 🪶

Are you looking to get a graduate degree in Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Sciences? This funded MS project at OSU is focused on testing a range of non-invasive method for small mammals (enclosed camera trapping + thermal cameras mounted on drones) against SCR applied to live trapping data.

This would be grand! Of course Zotero would have to guess which articles I actually read and which ones I just skimmed the abstract.
I wish zotero made me a little end of year graph showing me my reading history like storygraph does. How many non bird papers did I read?

Another advantage of histograms over stacked bar charts is you can easily include error bars if you have a measure of uncertainty
I like this way of presenting ordinal data!

I think people are sometimes too quick to use stacked bar charts for ordinal data when histograms can be simpler and easier to read #datavis #rstats
Was reminded by @matthewbjane.bsky.social on the other site of some fancy ideas I've implemented for presenting ordinal data, here's one for paired ordinal data (@chelseaparlett.bsky.social was originally asking about it on the other site years back).
