TIL Venom got his name after being forced to write ‘venomous’ celebrity scandal stories after Peter Parker ruined his journalistic reputation

How much Venom can I read before Spider-Man 2? LET’S FIND OUT.

Starting here with Venom’s first appearance in May 1988.

FINAL PANEL: Wasp names The Avengers, then Iron Man says:

“We’ll fight together, or separately, if need be!”

Absolutely the most hilarious thing he could have said at this moment. The fact that he looks like Bender really makes this feel like a Matt Groening-style ‘we learnt nothing’ denouement.

At one point I zoned out and then this was happening. Literally no idea what’s going on anymore.

More relatable content from the hulk

Uh oh! First spoken line of dialogue by a woman in an Avengers comic goes BADLY.

This dude belongs to the TEEN BRIGADE and he tries to call the Fantastic Four but misdials the number and *that* is how the Avengers were formed.

Also, look, he *almost* performs a haiku:

Contact me pronto
Before any innocent jokers
Get hurt real bad

Here Hulk takes a moment to contemplate how human suffering is so often the result of the fictional narratives we trap ourselves in.

Always ahead of his time, Loki, imprisoned in some dimension or whatever, invents the 21st Century working-from-home grindset.

First of all, massive congratulations to ANT MAN for making it to the starting lineup - can’t believe MCU tricked me into thinking this was a joke character and not in fact the George Washington of masked superheroics.

Just read the first-ever issue of THE AVENGERS (#1 September 1963). Click through for my incisive literary commentary!

Also, I know I have a major Twin Peaks confirmation bias BUT Cocoon often reminded me of TP, especially The Return! The bugs, the orbs, the tubes, the machinery, "the dreamer who dreams, then lives inside the dream". Lots of echoes here- would love to know if any were intentional!

Cocoon was OUTSTANDING! It teaches you a whole game language in a matter of hours. It makes you an expert in its design. It's equally challenging and supportive - I loved how it used blocking exits to say: everything you need to solve this is here. Many QOL touches like that throughout. STUNNING.

Weekend plans: gonna play THIS, and then I’m gonna go see STOP MAKING SENSE twice in a row!

Spent the bulk of the day reading @kaittremblay.bsky.social’s book on collaborative world building - so good, so many new ideas! (An early aside I really liked describes how writers can use synecdoche to turn players into co-authors 😍) I can already tell I’ll be returning to this book A LOT.

I’ve just finished re-reading Grant Naylor’s RED DWARF for the first time in maybe 25 years and:
•It’s so good
•I can’t believe it’s out of print
•I can’t believe it was written AFTER the show, feels very much like its own thing
•I reeeeally can’t believe it’s out of print
•Thank smeg for libraries
