It did use a modem. Technically.
An old school dial up modem, designed to be used with a rotary phone. Instead of a phone jack, the speaker and receiver of the phone handset is inserted into a pair of rubberized cups. The image shows a beige rotary phone to the left of the beige box-like modem with handset already in place.

A black and white photograph of a DECwriter, a teletype terminal used to connect to a mainframe. It has a built-in keyboard but no screen. Instead a ream of tractor feed paper spools up into the DECwriter from the floor. The terminal prints dot matrix input and output onto the page.
