Oscar Best Picture #31: "Gigi" (1958)
A drama about an old woman selling her granddaughter into prostitution. No. Wait. I mean a musical/comedy about a young woman charming an older man out of his philandering ways with her love. Hmmm... Which is better? Still, a couple of memorable songs.

Oscar Best Picture #30: "The Bridge on the River Kwai" (1957)
It's as good as when I saw it first and holds up really well for a modern audience.
Considering how soon this was after the war, it has more nuance than you'd expect, though it probably doesn't go far enough to be called an anti-war film.

For those who don't realize that Andor is not just the best Star Wars show, but one of the best *TV* shows out now, here's a taste why.

On Sunday, "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" will be screening in theaters for its 50th Anniversary. It would be fun, but I'm not sure I want to be in a theater with a bunch of people who want to quote every line.
In other words, I don’t want to belong to any club that will accept me as a member.

I'm a little surprised that the 250th anniversary of the "Shot heard round the world" came and went without much fuss. Seems like now is a good time to celebrate the people standing up to an unwanted king.

Oscar Best Picture #29: "Around the World in 80 Days" (1956)
Ugh. This was supposed to be fun, but it's a slog. At three hours, it's an hour and a half too long. Apparently, they opted for cameos and slapstick over continuity or story. Still, fun bits are sprinkled between the casual racism.

If you can handle a little horror and gore, Ryan Coogler's "Sinners" is fantastic. Unfortunately, like so many movies these days, the trailer gives away too much of the film, so avoid it if you can.

A lonely and ugly (by Hollywood standards) man meets a lonely and ugly (by Hollywood standards) woman in working-class New York City.
Ernest Borgnine (Marty) is the only man in the movie who isn't a misogynist. But that's by design.

Oscar Best Picture #27: "On The Waterfront" (1954)
That Marlon Brando fellow coulda bin a contender! Although winning an acting Oscar probably means he isn't a bum. (P.S.: This was his 3rd nomination while working with Elia Kazan and his fourth overall - but his first win)

Using the stopped-clock theory, I guess it was bound to happen that I would agree with Trump on *something*.
And while the question remains of whether he has the legal authority to make this change, I doubt anyone will seriously challenge it. (Except maybe the Zinc lobby).
President Trump says he has ordered the U.S. Treasury to stop minting new pennies, calling their production “wasteful.”

“For far too long the United States has minted pennies which literally cost us more than 2 cents,” Trump said in a Truth Social post Sunday night.
