It's a double standard, yes. But it's essentially the problem with morality. I think I'd argue that you have to hold to certain principles against people with no principles. And sadly, faced with bloodthirsty lunatics, while never giving up the fight, it's not smart to give them more of an excuse.
Being on the left, for some, means you're not allowed to celebrate the misfortune of your enemies, while also knowing that they would crack open a cold one while they watch you and your entire family tortured to death.
