Here is the late Eileen Battersby's @irishtimes.com review of The Unseen, translated by Don Bartlett and Don Shaw: "Easily one of the best novels I have ever read."

The Unseen review: Red sky at mourning for a Norwegian fishing family
Eileen Battersby found Roy Jacobsen’s book to be as blunt as it is subtle, and one of the best novel she’s ever read

Trump and his greedhead cronies may get a big surprise in spite of their efforts to rig the 2026 election. They could find themselves swamped by a blue wave. Americans are wising up to the fact that Trump is turning the American dream into a nightmare.

Sometimes the sheer idiocy of this moment overwhelms me. The idea that our convicted felon POTUS who incited an attack on DC police then pardoned the attackers & who's the most corrupt official in US history is going on an "anti-crime" ride-along in a city w/falling crime rate is...(brain explodes)

Adlestrop.

Possibly the only poem you need for the rest of June.

Read it slowly, and let it linger...

Sickened to see the amount of people the far right rounded out today. I don't know the exact figure but they filled the street completely all the way across from the Hugh Lane to the lower side of the Gresham hotel. Please do not ignore this, it's their biggest showing yet.Push back however you can.

La loi is mightier than Le Pen (for the moment, at least):
French far-right leader Marine Le Pen found guilty of embezzling EU funds
The presidential hopeful was found guilty in a case that could see her banned from standing in the 2027 election.

Jaw dropping ignorance. Witkoff knows nothing. Has no knowledge of the violence that Russians have used to suppress Ukrainians in Occupied Ukraine
It’s clear from this that the only difference between Steve Witkoff’s and Vladmir Putin’s views on the war in Ukraine is that Putin actually knows the names of all the five Ukrainian regions he wants to keep.

Witkoff saying that the overwhelming majority in the four Ukrainian regions (Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, Donetsk, Luhansk) voted to be part of Russia is preposterous. The 2022 referendums were sham. The majority in Zaporizhzhia live in areas under Ukrainian rule where there was no referendum at all.
