Btw The Blood Web is co-written with the wonderful @jaxsilvester.bsky.social (next one out soon). And The Path Keeper was first released in 2017- then re-released with a new publisher 2019. And four other full-length books I wrote in that time haven't see the light of day...yet. So 15 books written!

#SimmondsWritingTips

Today I'm going to talk about #self-publishing, and how to know if it's the right route for you. Full disclosure, I have books published by a big 4 publisher, an indie publisher, a digital only publisher, and I co-write a paranormal romance series which we self-publish.

When I was a buyer at a large indie, my rule of thumb was:

1 preorder: huh, let me take a closer look at this one
2 preorders: we need to stock this book
3 preorders: we should order enough to face this out
4+ preorders: this should be on front-of-store display
More detail: When booksellers get pre-orders, it's a quantitative and qualitative signal that there is like *something here* about a book. The avalanche of new books out there is hard to communicate if you're not in the industry, and pre-orders are one of vanishingly few signals. It is a real thing!
The thing about pre-orders: If you pre-order thru an indie bookstore (which generally doesn't cost you up-front!) it is HUGE for the lifeblood of the book, it is a boost to authors, the publisher, and the booksellers who steward this life. It's a little thing but it's meaningful should this inspire!

The Boys was a huge inspiration to @jaxsilvester.bsky.social and I when writing our Caedis Knight paranormal romance series. The trope twisting, the discomfort, the brave writing, and the totally bonkers messed-upness of it all. Love it!!
I fucking LOVE The Boys.

It's incredible political satire & by far the best comic adaptation ever seen.

It takes what was a trollish book & made it into commentary about the dangers of hero worship, consumerism, escapism, and of course, fascism.

Anthony Starr deserves an award for Homelander.
Ooo what’s your favorite show?

I told someone a childhood story today and they went “I’m so sorry that happened to you” but I had that story firmly filed away under the “funny” tab in my brain and now I have to fucking reshuffle it to tragic
