Do yourself a favor and read this obituary for Ozzy O by @themountaingoats.bsky.social, who has consistently returned to Ozzy as a subject of his own art.
The voice of Ozzy Osbourne was unlike anything before it. John Darnielle of @themountaingoats.bsky.social reflects on the loss of the singular frontman

You know you are just about done with the manuscript review part of book writing when you are so tired of your book that you don't care anymore what's in it and don't ever want to see it again.

Just finished up a deep dive on Lucretius reception for a forthcoming digital encyclopedia, which naturally culminates with John Darnielle and NASA @themountaingoats.bsky.social

A great example (if anyone needed one) of why Kendrick is the best active poet: in “TV off” he rhymes prophetic/cosmetics/aesthetics/plyometric/highest metric with “just made it sweet; you could die, I bet it”, using half-rhyme and content to imply what should have been there: “diabetic”

Same!
Most insane moment on the new Kendrick was at the very end when he said my full legal name, thanked me for listening, and said I'm the only one who truly understands what he's saying

This will spawn a whole new generic discourse akin to figuring out what a Satyr play is
I should do this. Have a Father Halloween persona and if I’m credited as FH the songs are weirder and have no clear moral grounding just thorny situations and if I’m credited as JD then it’s sad songs about trying to live life such that saying “I tried” at the moment of death won’t be a lie
Will you step up to the plate? Will you become the terribly eerie Father Halloween this divided world so sorely needs?

Cf. Athenaeus’ assessment of Aeschylean tragedy, generated 2 centuries or so after the Odyssey, as “slices from the banquet of Homer”
This is super true, and it’s true in music, too; the industry relies heavily on first week sales to stay afloat in both cases, so it’s great for authors and musicians if you buy stuff in the first week. But the idea that you have to have something to say about it right away or even soon, absurd!
You're not "late to the party" when you enjoy an old book for the first time. Books don't have an RSVP deadline. The party started long ago, and guests show up when they're meant to.

I am devastated by the news that Sharon James passed away yesterday. Her invitation to me to write a paper on Ovid in the #MeToo era set me on the path that I'm on today, and her confidence in my voice, seen in the email below, has been invaluable to me as a scholar and a person. Requiescat in pace.

I saw someone asking who was the best pitcher of the steroid era (Maddux, Randy Johnson, or Pedro), so I’ve thought about it all day, and I just can’t see how anyone beats Pedro’s peak (esp. the 2000 season when his ERA was 1.74 and he averaged almost 12K/9). This is what Fridays are for btw.
