Haha, thanks!

I've been trying to hold on to guys, instead of doing a firesale, in order to find a trade that would upgrade my core. As soon as I saw the Hughes news, I threw the trade out.

When I was doing VR and mixed reality research back in ~2017, my solution for the Hololens was to tape pieces of paper to the walls to help tracking/orientation.

Lighthouse worked perfectly though.

I hope 8 years later they've solved that light issue.

Cameras allow for easy pick-up and go, but they've got downsides.

They're claiming "infrared LEDs on the outside make tracking great even in dark environments", but I'd be shocked if they've finally figured it out.

The Meta Quest 3 (2023) cameras have trouble tracking in low-light.

Also that Valve headset is running a version of SteamOS on an ARM64 processor.

So I'm guessing we'll start seeing Steam on phones and tablets at some point (probably just EU to start):

Alternative app stores will be allowed on Apple iPad in the EU from September 16 | TechCrunch
It was a matter of time, but Apple is going to allow third-party app stores on the iPad starting next week, on September 16. This change will occur with

If I were Microsoft, I'd probably be thrilled with the hardware portion of this announcement. It's another avenue for more software sales. That said, Gamepass doesn't work on Linux and SteamOS erodes the Windows-market.

If I'm Sony, I'm probably hoping my IP can lead me down the Nintendo-route.

Microsoft is closer than Sony (mostly due to Xbox needing to pivot/innovate due to market share). Ecosystem is unified, but there are still OS differences between Windows/Xbox. I can get third party hardware in different form factors, but no official Microsoft handhelds, etc.
November 12, 2025 at 8:40 PM
Sony doesn't have a unified OS/ecosystem. I can buy Sony games on PC, but I have to purchase it again if I want to play it on my PS5. No Sony store on PC. No third-party devices running their OS/store. Portal occupies an awkward space in the official form factor area.

I kind of find it funny that Valve has done what Microsoft/Sony are attempting to do...but have not quite pulled off yet.

I.e. Unified OS/ecosystem across multiple device form factors + choice of using official or unofficial hardware.

This hardware announcement is where the market is going.

But every time I go into that mall I go out of my way to look at the damn thing.

They want $300+ for it, and I keep thinking "maybe they'll eventually massively discount it".

And I know I'd never actually use it. And I have a Keith Courage ROM on my PC, and I never play it.

But I keep looking.

It was the only console in the house until I bought a used N64 in 1999 (?). And that made me probably one of 7 people on the planet who actually loved Keith Courage.

We eventually sold the TurboGrafx sometime in the aughts, as no one was using it.

Someone in the Seattle area *has* to have that recorded on a VHS tape somewhere.
