Tell me you have no idea how higher ed works outside of elite universities without telling me: conservative groups want to "increase" teaching loads to 3-3. 🤪 They also want to privilege $ to STEM. 🤣 So, they want to lower my teaching load and keep the $ status quo at most unis? #academicsky

I'm from Montana, so it might be in the State Constitution to watch this a million times when homesick.

Seeing the disappointment of colleagues this time of year coupled with the lack of feedback from search committees means it is time for me to share my "thoughts from the regional comprehensive" job search blog post.

What did that other person do so well (if it wasn’t publications)?
“But I have more publications @ top journals! Why did X get the job and not me?” Here are some thoughts on conversations at regional comprehensives regarding candidates who perhaps don’t have unlim…

Watching some once vibrant dreamers drown in the "good old days" rhetoric urged me draft a short essay. jasondormadyhistorian.wordpress.com/2025/11/30/i...
Imagination, History, and The Future
One of the places where I get into trouble with my students is insisting they use their imaginations. Can you imagine what the past was like based on these documents? Can you imagine what kind of h…

I found a missing property register from the Jalisco State Archive in the Municipal Archive. #miracles #archive #history We're looking at 400 pages of material covering last names G to N. No longer having to figure out the acrobatics of "here's all the women who own property not named Garcia, etc."

Excellent primer yesterday on the current basic #economics of #Argentina from @wbur.org On Point. Hear @mdebolle.com explain terms for non-specialists (with a side of fact checking). A good item to send friends doing the "it is not a bailout" song and dance.

The real reason for the U.S.-Argentina bailout
American taxpayers are bailing out Argentina to the tune of $20 billion. But what does the U.S. get out of it? And can it really fix Argentina’s economy?

Yesterday I started working with indices de catastro. These are alphabetic lists of property owners, their property, transactions, and property values. #Guadalajara #Mexico #sources #history #skystorians #archives #Urban The archivist had to clean off the books because she says nobody consults them.

Guillermo O'Donnell wrote this 26 years ago in an edited collection about the rule of law in Latin America. The Rule of Law is a complicated idea (see Whigs and Hunters), but generally it helps prevent civil decay and unrest. #RuleOfLaw

Public busses in #Guadalara #Mexico. 75 people in a full bear hug racing then suddenly braking together in absolute silence except a Luismi soundtrack.
Sometimes on the NYC subway, it hits just how weird it is for 50 strangers to be packed in a crate together while fully dedicated to pretending they don't exist

And some nascent midwest-esque part thinks "Maybe I should say hello--" before the NY part cuts in with "Mm I wouldn't recommend that"

In 2008 I was walking at 6am in Columbus, NM after camping at the state park with students. Border Patrol was driving on another street, saw me, flipped around, came racing up on me, pulled up, looked at me, then raced off. My white face was my "papers."

Saying it again into the void: #Farm and #Ranch voters are not the same as #Rural voters. Killing fams is not a losing position for the #MAGA #GOP because they retain rural voters via other positions. Farm votes are miniscule: even #skateboarders are a larger voting bloc.
