The Edinburgh Festival was the brainchild of Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany. They wanted to show that there’s a lot more that connects us than separates us. And art is one of those things that transcends borders.

And it’s not even as if there’s any private sector business standing in the way. The buses and trams are owned by local government. The trains are owned by the Scottish government. Surely, of all cities, it should be easier in Edinburgh?

I don’t think we need to play like that anymore. We have the best squad in the league now. So many goal scoring options. Plus the best defence anywhere. Let’s just go out there and score more goals than the opposition

My daughter’s doing History for Advanced Higher just now. The way that Chamberlain’s appeasement is talked about now is way different to how it was when we were kids.

Now he’s seen as a genius who knew that Britain couldn’t win a war, and he was using the time to build up our capabilities.
