The San Francisco gartersnake - one of the USA's most beautiful and endangered snakes. Many people don't believe a bright blue and red snake can be discreet - but when seen in its habitat you can see how these snakes can evade notice.

I keep thinking about the folks trying to break into the environmental/ecological field right now. So many who've had seasonal or permanent jobs ripped out from beneath them, hopeful grad students to-be seeing their opportunities go up in smoke. I don't want them to give up. (1/2)

Reminder that a study on lizard saliva eventually led to the development of Ozempic so be real wary of the criticism of studies and funding that sounds non-sensical when presented with no context.

An Arizona Black Rattlesnake found one morning in a high elevation stand of ponderosa pine. I was stunned by its beauty and overall mild temperament, extremely similar to that of timber rattlesnakes here in the East.

An absolutely laughable amount of Sonoran Desert Toads (Incilius alvarius) eating insects off of this gas station wall in southern Arizona this past summer.

Happy Saturday everyone! Here’s an Eastern Hognose (Heterodon platirhinos) illustration that I’ve been working on for an exciting new project. It’s not quite finished yet but it’s getting there!

First post here! No better way to kick it off than with these goofy looking toads found this past spring- The Eastern Spadefoot

These goobers spend most of the year underground, emerging only during heavy rainfall to try and find a mate.
