idiot
I suppose I just have such basement levels of trust in this government and its education secretary that I find it basically impossible to believe they'll do anything good without there being some overreach concealed in the other palm.

I'm not sure if those are necessarily higher level debate tbh, but yes I'm sure there's dozens of posts we can all agree are stupid and counterproductive. There are also more considered responses about the confluence between web censorship and transphobes (and the UK government) that I've seen tho.

bsky.app/profile/jdmu... this doesn't strike me as someone making it up for example. So it's all fuel to the fire. But yes happy to leave it because nobody really knows for certain
Assume it started from this.

That doesn't sound like something I'd agree with, no, I'm sure people are going a bit mental, I've not seen much but then I try not to be online too much. But then it's a raw issue (as is online censorship).

Oh nooooo that's one of my favourites ruined
November 12, 2025 at 2:02 PM
If it's a mistake it's a colossal fuck up by someone. If the MP for Canterbury calls up for a photo op you say no thankyou. There should be pictures of her on the wall like the FBI Most Wanted.
November 12, 2025 at 1:51 PM
Doubtless all wrapped up in the real concerns about the pro ana stuff, self harm, the snuff videos the murderers were watching.
November 12, 2025 at 1:49 PM
I don't suppose she ever would disavow, no. But if you asked me if she comes across like a conflicted liberal parent who perhaps emotionally blames the murder on her daughter's transition (and so by extension the online communities who encouraged her on that journey) I'd say it's pretty plausible.
November 12, 2025 at 1:49 PM
Oh maybe it's not, I see what you mean. Maybe doesn't constitute Duffield being "in on it" but you still wonder how this happened, campaigns do have some control over whose endorsements they accept. Maybe she did just barge in though or hoodwink a clueless person in a lanyard.
November 12, 2025 at 1:36 PM
Honestly I only saw this Duffield thing five minutes ago and I've gone completely the other way, it's very damning. It's one short of posing with Glinner ffs. Is she being hijacked? There's no way she doesn't know who Rosie Duffield is and what she represents. What are people meant to think?
November 12, 2025 at 1:31 PM
the tide turned the more she spoke, I remember an LBC or This Morning interview really soon after. Again; not judging her too harshly for how she chose her words like a week or two out of her child being murdered but lots of people started noticing the omissions and the reframing of what happened.
November 12, 2025 at 1:24 PM
bsky.app/profile/capt... and again, like.....bipartisan maybe, but Duffield is an absolute headcase and there's absolutely no way she's unaware of her views considering how directly she involved herself.
When Rosie Duffield is in on it I think we can safely say the anti-phone campaign in Brianna's name is actively at odds with tackling transphobia
November 12, 2025 at 1:22 PM
I think if you were being really brutally #optics about it you might say she wants to be as bipartisan and uncontroversial as possible to get cross-bench political and media support for this thing she cares about. but you could hardly blame trans people for feeling betrayed by that either.
November 12, 2025 at 1:20 PM
well it's not really anything she can do now, so I agree she might as well crack on with the phone thing, though there's obviously a right and a wrong way to do it, I don't know her proposals in detail. a glance of the campaign page and there's no mention of the nature of the hate crime there either
November 12, 2025 at 1:19 PM
ultimately we can't see into her heart (unless that person can substantiate the deadnaming thing which would be damning, no idea) but I don't think people are completely unfounded in wondering why the emphasis isn't on the single most obvious cause.
November 12, 2025 at 1:11 PM
jumping to conclusions such as e.g. she was uncomfortable with her daughter's identity, she blames her transition for making her a target. Chimes with transphobe groups as well who explicitly propose limiting online access for trans-questioning kids to make sure they aren't exposed to those ideas.
November 12, 2025 at 1:09 PM
But that's what people think feels off. Why is that the thing that is most important? The rising tide of transphobia and hostility directly led to her daughter's murder, it's not a vague kind of connection. What does it say to not choose that as your campaign and your public stand? So people are
November 12, 2025 at 1:09 PM
what was her involvement with Duffield? can't find it on google though obviously I remember Duffield's general involvement at the time. also I've not seen anyone source this deadnaming thing. again it might be true but I can't seem to find any first hand accounts.
November 12, 2025 at 12:59 PM
I think it's quite unusual to have your child be the victim of a hate crime and show relative disinterest in the nature of that hate crime to be honest. I don't know about the deadnaming at live talks, obviously that would be fairly conclusive but I've not seen anyone cite where it comes from.
November 12, 2025 at 12:57 PM
(obviously her choice of words immediately post-bereavement aren't the most fair thing to focus on, her doing on LBC or whatever obviously a horrible idea for all concerned and not what she needed)
November 12, 2025 at 12:46 PM
I don't think she's been that consistent though I won't claim to have done a full literature review, I remember being quite shocked at her choice of words around when it happened, not talking about transphobia at all, only Brianna's online behaviour. felt like a very deliberate omission at the time.
November 12, 2025 at 12:46 PM
I think people just struggle to get past the (not totally unjustified) suspicion that she thinks the internet turned Brianna trans and that is what is implicitly being targeted. But as you say if the outcome is less phones in schools that's a fairly unambiguously good thing.
