A “spark bird” is the bird (or birds!) that sparks your interest in birds. Spark bird moments make for great stories and hosts Dr. Jenn Lodi-Smith and Janet McNally are great storytellers. @janetmmcnally.bsky.social #citsci

The root that tears apart your foundation begins as a seed of distrust, hate, and blame.

The seed that grew into a dictatorship in Europe didn’t arrive overnight.

It started with everyday Germans mad about inflation and looking for someone to blame.

Every single stupid conversation I’ve had with a scientist about anticipatory obedience and historical comparisons over the last week has had me thinking about how scientists’ political incompetence is one of the major arguments for a liberal arts education

Like you’re literally a tool without it
A bunch of needs in labcoats:

"If we comply with the fascists demands they'll surely let us keep up our research"

Those same scientists months or years before:

"Eh, I'll skip history class. I wanna be a scientists. Not a historian lol"
Besides being cruel, anticipatory obedience doesn’t work www.chemistryworld.com/opinion/scie...

The content of Trump administration actions matters, but so does the tone. The histrionic, Truth-Social style here is the language of propagandists, coming directly from government sources
A “hoax.”

I have experienced a curious mix of feelings while having a significant portion of my life’s work in books and the art of my friends distorted and vandalized by post-literate fascists for the last few years. The feelings right now are uniquely awful.

One of the best things you can do right now is read books. Buy them. Borrow them from the library. Gift them.

Read history. Read fiction. Read science writing. Read anything that shows you the world is bigger than what fascists say it is.

Read to remember why your resistance matters. 📚💙
