The core role of the university in society is the generational transmission of knowledge and rare skills. This has been already long forgotten by administrators who have prioritised rebranding universities as publicly-funded job-training centres in recent decades.

A lot of really good sense here - regulation won't make the difference without all the stuff you need to support good management, which the NHS desperately needs.

There's too much emphasis on initiatives in healthcare, while our basic foundations ever more stretched.
Initiatives arrive with much fanfare, & fade away (replaced by the next intiative), & we wonder why they've not had the impact we hoped for. It'd be better to properly invest in our foundations.
