At its core, good caregiving is about finding a way to communicate — listening, watching and empathizing — to learn and respond to what the other person wants, needs and feels.

"A person with dementia is not being deliberately difficult. Often their behavior is an attempt to communicate. If you can establish what this is, you can resolve their concerns more quickly. Place yourself in their shoes and try to understand how they might be feeling. There's power in empathy."
