[1/2] 📢 GLAMOS @scnat.ch press release out today: Swiss glaciers lost another 3% of their volume in 2025, the 4th-largest decline ever measured. In just 10 years, they’ve lost a quarter of their ice mass. Over 1k small glaciers have already vanished.

Incredible ice loss measured again at #Konkordiaplatz on the #Aletsch #Glacier, home to the thickest ice in the #Alps (still about 800 m!). Yesterday’s survey revealed another –4.6 m of ice gone in just one year. :(

Thanks, @davepetley.bsky.social, for the nice blog post about our paper, which was recently published in Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences!
An excellent new paper (Walden et al. 2025) examines the occurrence of accelerated movement in rock slope landslides in Alaska as adjacent glaciers melt. Some of the slopes, such as the one in the images below (at Barry Glacier), showed periods of pronounced acceleration.

Was the Birch Glacier #Blatten landslide due to climate change? Some thoughts here: www.antarcticglaciers.org/2025/05/birc...
Birch Glacier and Blatten Landslide - AntarcticGlaciers.org
The collapse of Birch Glacier and the devastating landslide that impacted the Swiss village of Blatten occurred as a result of supraglacial landslides.

Here is a factsheet on what is currently known about Birchgletscher, the Swiss glacier that catastrophically collapsed on 28 May 2025, following heavy debris loading from Kleines Nesthorn.
Our thoughts are with all those most deeply affected.

A symbolic heart drawn yesterday by 300 children from the valley, at the estimated location of the Mer de Glace front in 2035... 😢

Glaciers need actions more than symbols.

Human need symbols to tell themselves that they have control over their lives 🤍

"Women are PIs on 58% of the canceled grants, although they are PIs on only 34% of all active NSF grants.

Similarly, Blacks are PIs on 17% of the terminated grants, although they make only 4% of the total pool. Hispanic PIs and those with disabilities were twice as likely to lose a grant."
Another scoop from Jeff Mervis (@policyhound.bsky.social): NSF's ~1400 grant terminations have disproportionately affected PIs from groups underrepresented in science: women, racial & ethnic minorities, & those with disabilities. 1/3

Thanks to my colleagues for joining the @vaw-glaciology.bsky.social Pickathon yesterday afternoon! 🤓 Using seismic data from my field site in Alaska, we identified local events such as rockfall, with the aim being to quantify the uncertainty of a single picker and make an event catalog 🏔️🪨
