500 feet high. Hoping my volcanologist will perhaps take a few steps back and give Pele her space.
Episode 36 of Kilauea’s eruption begins after days of anticipation
Scientists said fountains from the north vent are about 500 feet high, and fountains from the south vent are about one-third as high.

The fountain just got so large they had to zoom out
enjoying watching Camera 1 this morning as the surface patches of lava start to cool and then meet resistance and fold as the hotter lava underneath continues to move – you can watch it make those characteristic patterns that are so common on the Big Island

I have complicated thoughts about the images, but very clear thoughts about the significance of the message – the cruelty of shutting down USAID immediately, with no off ramp
Today @TheNewYorker released our short documentary “Rovina’s Choice” online.

It traces the ongoing effects of the sudden shutdown of US foreign aid through the story of one mother in Kenya as she seeks to save her daughter from sickness and starvation. 🎥 1/ www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...

Once again, EVERY R1 research university depends on federal funding for ~15-25% of its budget. You simply can't unplug the largest or 2nd-largest source of $$ of every R1 university & expect it not to have devastating consequences for graduate education, which will spill over to undergrad education.
