Letzter Stop: 1993.

Mobile Klimaanlage wurde installiert.

Technische Störung: Klimaanlage, Schiebetüren und Reservierungsanzeige kaputt.

Aber der Waggon ist schon mit dabei. Ich sitze darin.

Von heute. Ging schneller, als gedacht. 😔

And just like that, I’ve come full circle. Back at Vienna Meidling station. Right on time.
June 23, 2025 at 6:04 AM
Now settled into my triple sleeper compartment on Nightjet 467 to Vienna. After a few surprises this evening, everything’s back on track. Good night!

Arrived in Zurich with a bit of time to stroll around the station—and what a station Zurich HB is!
June 22, 2025 at 9:33 PM
A TGV Lyria was provided as a replacement—though, unfortunately, it’s hopelessly overcrowded. Not exactly the seamless Swiss train experience I had in mind. Still, the main concern now is making my connection in Zurich.

What a fantastic weekend in Basel—drifting in the Rhine was the perfect way to beat the heat. My IC 787 to Zurich was unfortunately cancelled due to construction work, but it gave me the unexpected chance to chat with the famously friendly Swiss railway staff.
June 22, 2025 at 6:12 PM
A brief stop in Saint Louis before continuing on to Basel SBB. I’ve never heard train staff apologize so often—for being just five minutes late!

Leaving Paris behind on the 07:21 TGV Lyria to Basel. It’s a pity I had so little time to explore Gare de Lyon.

The @economist.com‘s consumer survey definitely stands out compared to others I’ve taken in the past.
June 19, 2025 at 7:23 AM
Arrived at Gare de l’Est with almost the exact delay we started with in Vienna. I’ll be exploring Paris over the next few days before continuing on to Switzerland.
June 18, 2025 at 9:57 AM
Woke up in France this morning. Unfortunately, we didn’t make up any of the delay overnight. As always, it’s a bit of a shame they don’t pick up fresh croissants in Strasbourg for breakfast—and now even the orange juice has vanished from the menu.

Saying goodbye to Austria with a late departure from Salzburg. Now waiting for passport control as the journey continues.
June 17, 2025 at 9:00 PM
Embarking on a little train adventure over the next few days! First up: the ÖBB Nightjet 468 to Paris. A two-hour delay gave me an unexpected chance to take in the charm of Vienna Meidling station.

Ist sich leicht ausgegangen. Murtalbahn hat ausgiebig auf alle gewartet. Waren grad in Murau, für mich geht’s aber noch weiter nach Tamsweg. :)

Fertigstellung der Tunnelbauarbeiten heuer. Inbetriebnahme laut ÖBB-Website 2030. also noch etwas Geduld. :)

I also thought about using memes in my lecture, but wasn't sure if my students would find them as outdated as Simpson references. @jamoeberl.bsky.social encourages me to test some of the geography memes I already prepared:

Scheint nicht die aktuellsten Entwicklungen miteinzubeziehen. Auch in Schweden geht es seit ein paar Jahren ("multiple Krisen") deutlich nach unten, siehe z.B. hier: www.demografische-forschung.org/archiv/defo2...

Thanks, but I am afraid that was not the one. It might have been the map below from @rodriguez-pose.bsky.social and Bartalucci (2024 - doi.org/10.1093/cjre...). But I am still not sure. I remember a different colour scheme... :)

Also die Schneebergbahn hat sowas. Zumindest in der Minimalvariante.

This week's lecture on demographics of rural regions in Austria is data viz heavy, featuring tons of charts and maps. Looking forward to it!
