The Calvinball conservatism embraced by Trump and his Supreme Court might be super popular with the sickos in the GOP base, but it is wildly unpopular with the 70% of voters who do not fit that description.

It's good news that the court is not going to be reconsidering Obergefell this term...but the emphasis in that sentence should fall on THIS TERM. There is absolutely no reason to believe that this court won't change its mind in the future, just as they did with Roe.

"Obergefell is settled law" is to the 2028 election what "Roe is settled law" was to the 2016 election. Roe and Obergefell are supported by a majority of voters. Republicans will try hard to convince independents that Obergefell is safe, nothing to see here...just as they did with Roe in 2016 & 20.

Let's talk new Senate minority leaders and the magic ability they'd have to get squishy moderate Senators to fall in line that Schumer doesn't have.

Basically, just because the politics seem to be the way they are now doesn’t mean they’ll be that way forever, or even for another week or another day. A lot of Feds are going on their second full missed paycheck now. That’s a lot of people getting desperate.

3a) Would it be worth saying fuck it and trying to hold out past republicans, in either a political or a human cost way? I don’t know!

1b) Not clear right now that there *is* a bill that the house and senate can get to agreement on, at least not quickly.
2a) I’d be disappointed at what feels like a cave, but I also feel like people are really underrating the pressure they’re feeling to end the shutdown

So, I’m primed to be skeptical of a lot of the ourobouros of reporting about impending deals, but in the event that there is one in the offing, my take is:
1a) Still gotta get hashed out in the house, and then hashed out in conference presumably, unless the senate bill sails through (lol)

it’s very difficult at this point to figure out if there is actual movement towards a Dem cave or just a Republican whisper campaign to Axios to make it seem like there’s a Dem cave and I’m going to hold my fire on any of it until something actually happens (or not)

Regular reminder that Axios stories saying Dems are about to cave are likely sourced from GOP staffers trying to make it happen.
Doesn't mean it definitely won't happen. But it's like those NYT stories that Harvard is considering caving (they haven't). The anonymous source was trying to manifest it.

The president is desperate to make sure Americans go hungry.
Seems like a pretty big news story? Especially as he's throwing massive parties for himself and building a giant golden ballroom?
If the media or Democrats are looking for a "kitchen table" issue, this seems like a *pretty* good fit

Donald Trump has asked his employees on the Supreme Court to overrule lower court orders demanding that he fulfill his duties to feed Americans who are due SNAP benefits

He's demanding that states which just rushed to fill the vacuum created by his cruelty "undo" that work.

Articles like this that depict democratic centrists of the 1980s and 1990s as a force of malice often miss context, because as much as Clintonism and DLC-ism have damaged Dems, they had historical reasons.
